Understanding Absences & Our Attendance Policy
At the NYC Department of Education, all absences count toward a student’s Year-to-Date (YTD) attendance rate, even if a parent provides documentation.
Notes and forms help teachers offer make-up work and verify the reason, but they do not remove the absence from the official attendance record.
What is YTD Attendance?
A student’s YTD attendance rate shows the percentage of school days they have been present so far this year. For example, if a student has been absent 10 out of 100 days, their YTD attendance is 90%.
You can check your child's YTD @ www.schoolsaccount.nyc/.
What Does “Chronically Absent” Mean?
The NYC Department of Education defines a student as chronically absent when their YTD falls below 90%, meaning they have missed 10% or more of the school year. This includes all absences—whether documented or not.
Student & Family Expectation:
We expect all students to maintain at least 90% YTD attendance to stay on track academically and avoid being flagged as chronically absent.
