When in college, students gain access to a variety of support services. Some services are available to everyone and some services are provided on a case by case basis.
Services that are typically accessible for all students in college:
career center (help with resume building, interview prep, finding a job, etc.)
financial aid office (help with tuition payments, FAFSA, scholarships, etc.)
registrar office (help with registering for courses, getting a copy of your transcript, transferring credits, etc.)
counseling center (offers mental health services like therapy, counseling, and crisis intervention)
health center (provides physical and mental health services)
academic advising (guidance on course selection, academic planning and degree requirements)
tutoring center/writing center (provides support to students on a variety of subjects)
Services that are typically provided on a case by case basis for students in college:
Office for Student Accessibility / Office for Students with Disabilities (helps provide support/resources to students who may need accommodations)
Please note, students need to advocate for themselves! The services will not automatically carry over from high school. Students will need to make an appointment to speak with a representative from this office at their college to request accommodations and typically need to provide paperwork such as proper documentation of the disability.
ACCES-VR stands for Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation. It's a program offered by the New York State Education Department that helps people with disabilities achieve and maintain employment and support independent living.
