Welcome to First Grade

Happy October! 

Please see below for this week's news and important 1st Grade Updates! 

Language Arts 

This week we will focus on the phonemic awareness skills of blending and segmenting short vowel words (CVC). Trick words will be: a, and, the, is, his, of. We will learned how to retell stories by identifying the characters and setting. We will continue our small group reading instruction. While I am working with students, our first graders will will continue to build stamina with Word Work activities, Work on Writing and Read to Self. 

Math 

We are continuing to build our math class community and learn about routines during our math instructional block.  The upcoming focus will be: 

• Place Value (Numbers within 20)

• Understanding 2-digit numbers focusing on place value 

• Fact Fluency 

Science

We have started our first Science Unit of the trimester. We will be focusing on Plant and Animal Superpowers! 

Religion 

This week our learning goals include: 

• God is our Father

  • God Loves and Forgives Us

• God is Our Holy Father 

  • The church is a holy place

Announcements:

Please Read the following about arrival

• When pulling up to the curb, please make sure that your child is unbuckled and ready to get out of the car. They should have their shoes and coat or jacket on (according to the season) and their backpack ready to go. 

• If your child is able to open the door and get out of the car independently and another carline (3-5 or middle school) is open, you can choose to join the other line. Please note that your student must be able to open the car door, exit the car, and walk up the sidewalk independently (or with an older sibling if one is in the car).

*Please make sure your child's snack is something small and mess free

• Wednesday, October 22nd: Feast Day celebration of St. Pope JP II: out-of-uniform day for Yellow House members only 

• Friday, October 24th: Spirit Wear Day / PAC Trunk or Treat 6:30 - 8:00 PM - gates open at 5:30 PM ESP closing at 5:30 PM 

• Wednesday, October 29th: House Meeting 8:30 - 10:00 AM - wear your house color!! School Mass 1:30 PM 

• Thursday, October 30th: Black and Orange Day/ Halloween Parade 2:15 PM 

• Friday, October 31st: School Closed - Happy Halloween!
