This is just a reminder that the Acadience End of Year Benchmark window will be open from May 1st through May 28th. This optional data collection for K-3 educators will provide valuable insights on strengths and areas of need in foundational literacy skills and allow you to look at change in learning over time.
This screening data is also pulled from Acadience Learning Online into a "Class Profile Report", along with any other assessment data that is put into enCompass. In the fall of 2025, educators can access this report which provides a snapshot of student achievement and attendance data from the previous school-year.

These literacy strategy sheets are designed to provide educators with a diverse range of teaching approaches to support students in developing foundational literacy skills. Whether working with the whole class, small groups, or one-on-one, these strategies are tailored to fit various instructional contexts. They also emphasize the importance of embedding literacy learning in play-based experiences, fostering authentic and meaningful engagement. Each sheet offers practical techniques that align with the Ontario Kindergarten Program 2016, helping educators create rich, supportive environments where every child can thrive in their literacy journey.
ONlit Mnemonics are creative and engaging tools designed to help young learners build essential literacy skills. Rooted in evidence-based practices, these memory aids use playful visuals, catchy phrases, and tactile activities to support letter-sound recognition, phonological awareness, and early reading skills. Perfect for Kindergarten classrooms, OnLit Mnemonics can be seamlessly integrated into whole group lessons, small group activities, one-on-one interactions, or play. By making learning fun and memorable, these resources empower educators to support students' literacy development in meaningful, developmentally appropriate ways.
The phonological awareness inventory helps us to determine the phonological awareness skills that students have and the skills that they require explicit instruction to develop.

The Phonological and Phonemic Awareness Game/Activity Suggestion Slide Deck is a working document that will be updated as needed. You will notice an instructional video that is for EDUCATORS as we are all navigating each of the PA skills and moving students across the continuum of these skills. Additional videos or activities that support K teams with their planning and programming have been included. This is a fantastic starting point.
You will also notice additional resources and websites at the very end of the slide deck. This is a great starting point for Kindergarten Educators and Planning Time Teachers who are running small group PA instruction.
Ideally, all students will receive explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics in Kindergarten, however, it must be recognized that it is a privilege to have an entire class that is ready to learn in this way. It is expected that it will take into November for the majority of Kindergarten classrooms to be ready in any capacity (small, medium, or whole group approaches) to begin UFLI. Until that time educators should be focused on establishing connections with students, oral language development, supporting student self-regulation, establishing the routines required for these lessons, and building the stamina required for explicit instruction.
Upon evaluation of the Language Foundations Expectation B2 chart, the knowledge and skills that children need to acquire by the end of Year 2 of Kindergarten (the K/ Gr 1 column) to ensure that they have the foundational skills that will set them up for success and enable them to build on their learning from grade to grade.
The Kindergarten Early Literacy Planning document provides further information about structured literacy in Kindergarten.
