February: Celebrating Uniqueness and Accepting Differences

Below are the activities for the month of February. Within each day there are 4 activities, one for each week of the month. Some relate more to the monthly theme than others, but all have the potential to be useful and enjoyable. You are not obligated to complete each of these activities. Be flexible with this outline... go off script and realize that some may take more than one session and others may be requested to be repeated. Listen to what your students want and have fun with it :)

"Mindful" Monday

Week 1: Privledge 101 (a powerpoint deck with 2 videos/discussion) could be used for 2 advisory session


Week 2: Privledge 101 (a powerpoint deck with 2 videos/discussion) could be used for 2 advisory session


Week 3: Responding to Differences Continuum - activity where students learn how different people can respond to differences they see in people ranging from exclusion to appreciation.


Week 4:Diversity: Heterogenity vs. Homogenity - activity with the goal of having students students and appreciate the value of heterogeneity and understand the tendency to homogeneity. ** Week 3 activity on responding to differences coninuum must be completed first**

"Topic" Tuesday

Week 1: What's In a Name - a google slide deck about why it's important to use someones preferred name and why there are sometimes barriers for people to pronounce ones name accurately.


Week 2: Neurodiveristy - google slide deck where students will learn about neurodiversity with a focus on ADHD and Autism.


Week 3: People with Dissabilities - activity where students try to read a poem with the words jumbled (represting what someone with dyslexia would see) Also discussion points about not-judging those with dissabilties.


Week 4: We are all a little different - short Ted Talk (5 minutes) about a boy who has a friend who has autism. Have students discuss ways in which they are different, ways they may struggle to be different, or ways that they may struggle to accept others who are different.

"With it" Wednesday

Week 1: Racism in Sports Logo -Google Slide Deck where students will learn about the Cleveland Indians and why their name has caused controversy. Students will Reflect on whether or not someones culture should be caricaturized for a sports team. Good follow up to Tuesdays "What's in a name".


Week 2: Label Activity - students are given labels (unknown to them) which determine how they will be greated by other students. The activity helps students understand the effects of inclusion and exclusion in a simulated activity. Great discussion about the impacts of nonverbal communcation.


Week 3:Walk apart -- Walk Together - short activity where students have a visual experience of how differences can "pull us apart" and similarities can pull us together. Make sure you class is mature enoguht to not make innapropriate comments about the two students who have volunteered. To help participants recognize the differences among people, as well as the many similarities people share.

"Thankful" Thursday

Week 1: Learn how to share about your identity by describing the cultural influences that have shaped y (Sharing Activity)


Week 2: Venn Diagram Partner Share - activity where students explore similarities and differences using a Venn Diagram with a partner(s)


Week 3: Cultural Identity Worksheet - students identify components that make up their cultural identity and also stereotypes of their culture that don't apply to them.

"Fun" Friday

Week 1: Whom to Leave Behind - fun activity where students must select which members they'd like to take on a trip to space based on certain demogrpahic characteristics.


Week 2: Is that a Fact? - Activity to helps students articulate the difference= between fact and opinion and to identify ways to clarify or qualify statements of opinion. It says to print out cards, but just utilizing the first section and the discussion points should be effective.


Week 3: Hello - short inspirational video about how asimple greeting is all it takes to change lives. "Hello" is a short film by Richard Galapate that won the Students' Category at the Nikon Cinema Z Film Festival that took place on November 2019. Discuss with your advisory ways that they can create bridges (big and small) to connect other people or groups in the community.
