Hello! My name is Elisabeth James (she/her), and I am a Mental Health Clinician for the State College Area High School. I started my journey in this position in 2021 and enjoy working with students as they navigate life's ups and downs.
Before becoming a Mental Health Clinician, I obtained my M.Ed. in Counselor Education from Pennsylvania State University, with an emphasis in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in Schools and Communities. Before obtaining my Master's, I received a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. I obtained my license as a professional counselor (LPC) in March of 2024 and practiced as a pre-licensed professional under supervision since beginning my journey at State High.
Through counseling, I aim to help clients learn more about themselves, the events that have made them who they are and overcome any struggles they may face. Every client is unique, and I work to meet students where they are in the therapeutic journey while providing empathy, connection, and support. I draw on techniques from psychodynamic theory while incorporating other techniques and theories when needed, such as but not limited to, Person-Centered Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Internal Family Systems Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Theory I also offer one-on-one and group sessions based on availability.
Throughout my role in the district, I am also invested in helping achieve our mental health and equity initiatives. Each year, I plan "A Week of Hope" for National Suicide Prevention Awareness Week in September, lead the planning committee for our "Mental Health Summits" in Winter and Spring, advise "Lift Every Voice: A Cultural Celebration," host "Mental Health Mondays" in May for Mental Health Awareness Month and much more.
I hope my work within the district helps students and families know that they matter while connecting them with spaces where they feel valued and heard.
