Do not wait until the week the essay is due to begin your research and writing. Gather your thoughts once the essay is assigned and think about your topic. Outline your topic! Change your thesis if you have to do so. Read and read again! If you are lost with required writing methods for history, use the academic guide packet to help you. Understand that writing and research is a required skill for an honors class. Also understand that you signed up for an honors class. According to the course description for honors, "Students should have advanced reading and writing abilities and a strong interest and motivation to pursue a more challenging study of U.S. History " Furthermore, if you are planning on attending college then writing and research will be key to your success. If you think my requirements are too much perhaps read the student sample from a former SBHS graduate now at the college level. This page includes honors writing topics, rubrics and videos to assist with writing for honors level. An essay read is a read-out-loud performed by the teacher using a student's essay.

Essay Guidelines
This screencast will address the rubric for this class.
The topics for the year are outlined on the chart to the left. Due dates will be determined in class and only hard copies will be accepted. Once you pick a theme or topic like technology or genocide, do not switch topics. The essays are designed by similar topics so by changing topics you are creating more research on your part. During the 3rd marking period, students can opt to complete the Wonder Years essay instead of the listed topics.
Essay Topics
Students should select the essay topic from the topic list grid based on the marking period the student is completing the essay in. Students can substitute the essay topic list by selecting from the list below:
1. Reading a book and completing the book reading assignment below.
2. Additionally, 3rd and 4th marking period essays could be substituted with the Wonder Years assignment.
Where to begin when writing in this class
Follow the format below:
1. Use the sentence format below for each supporting paragraph:
a. Topic Sentence (1-3 sentences): What is the main point of the paragraph in relation to historical events? Start here for your topic sentence section which should be around three sentences. Provide historic context for your reader in this section.
b. Introduction of your first source and text of source. Use according to (add author), or the (add document name) when introducing your source.

Note: Your analysis section must answer how your cited source supports your thesis or main point. This is your opportunity to explain to the reader why you are citing the source you selected in relation to your thesis. How does the source support your thesis?

l. End your paragraph by making a transition from this paragraph’s ending to the start of the next paragraph.
2. Locate and find only Jstor articles, primary sources or secondary sources from this class. I have uploaded readings with summaries into certain tabs on this site. Locate 1,2,3 and 4th marking period sources tab as well as certain tabs that pertain to your topic.
3. Outline your work and revise revise revise! Feel free to use the academic packet for further assistance with essay structure (bottom of this page).

Required
1. Create a Jstor account using the file (below) or determine how to access Jstor. This practice changes yearly. As of now, Jstor is accessed by using an SBHS password and log in. If this does not work then visit the library for assistance. The method for logging into Jstor changes yearly and is out of my control.
2. Complete the essay checklist Google Form (all Google forms for writing are at the bottom of this page)
