Belmont High School Students of the Outdoor Environmental Club were hoping to spread interesting environmental knowledge in order to spur environmental interest; thus, the Belmont Climate Summit was created.

Habitat Loss

Habitat loss is identified as the main threat to 85% of the worlds species(WWF). Through acts of deforestation, degradation, and transporting invasive species, approximately 1 million species of plants and animals are at risk of extinction in several decades(Nature).

Global Warming

Global temperature has risen by 1.82 F since 1880 and is projected to rise 2.5-10 F by 2050(NOAA). This will increase artic ice melt, sea level, # of extinctions, desertification, and more(NASA)

Plastic Pollution

8 million tons of plastic waste enter the ocean annually(National). The breakdown of plastics into micro and nano-plastics pose health risks for both humans and animals alike, such as carcinogen intake(cancer) and filling animals stomachs, leading to starvation

The National Ocean Service lists ten simple actions that you can do today, to create a meaningful impact for tomorrow.
