Due to the nature of the activities that we do in the music department, it is important that we are dressing appropriately. Students are expected, at minimum, to follow our school wide dress code expectations. However we have some extra requirements to ensure that students are staying safe, productive and appropriate in our activities.
School Dress Code: SHS School Dress Code - Page 26
In addition to the school dress code it is imperative that students also dress appropriately for band, specifically for band camp in the summer, after school rehearsals and Quarter 1 in class rehearsals. That chunk of the year is reserved for marching band and we are often outside doing strenuous activities that involve much movement. Please wear closed toe shoes, clothing you can move in, clothing appropriate for cold/hot weather and clothing that follows our SHS dress code. *You must have shorts under skirts/dresses and all shirts must have straps.
In addition to the school dress code it is imperative that students also dress appropriately for colorguard, specifically for band camp in the summer, after school rehearsals and in class rehearsals all year. Not only is the first quarter of the year reserved for marching band, where we are often outside doing strenuous activities that involve much movement, but the rest of the year is movement based as well. In preparation for Village, MIOSM, Disney, Spring Tour, and our Spring concerts, students enrolled in colorguard will be moving often and will need to be wearing appropriate clothing to do so. Please wear closed toe shoes, clothing you can move in, clothing appropriate for cold/hot weather and clothing that follows our SHS dress code. *You must have shorts under skirts/dresses and all shirts must have straps.
In addition to the school dress code it is imperative that students also dress appropriately for chorus. We perform choreography as a choir and it is important that students are able to move freely and safely while dancing and that attire still remains appropriately covering the areas the school dress code intends to be covered. Please wear clothing you can move in, and clothing that follows our SHS dress code. *You must have shorts under skirts/dresses and all shirts must have straps.
In addition to the school dress code it is imperative that students also dress appropriately for drama rehearsals and performances. We perform choreography in our musicals and it is important that students are able to move freely and safely while dancing and that attire still remains appropriately covering the areas the school dress code intends to be covered. Please wear clothing you can move in, closed toed shoes, clothing appropriate for cold/hot weather (the stage climate can be both!) and clothing that follows our SHS dress code. *You must have shorts under skirts/dresses and all shirts must have straps.
Students who are not wearing appropriate clothing may be asked to sit out for their safety and/or will have points docked for their participation grade that day. If enough days are docked, this will eventually affect their overall grade.
Students may bring extra clothing to change into, like a P.E. class. They can keep items in their garment bags for quick changing. However, most school appropriate clothing will work. Things like open toe shoes, shorts with less than a 3 inch inseam and low cut shirts are prohibited. Crop tops must be within 3 inches of bottoms at all times, skirts/dresses must have shorts underneath and all shirts must have straps.
For Performance Dress Code please see below.
Uniforms are meant to convey a sense of unity and professionalism within the ensembles. Any student appearing for a performance out of uniform will have their "Lifelong Learning" grade for that performance docked. If the offense is egregious enough, directors reserve the right to send the student home to change or may prevent them from performing.
In order to minimize the possibility of concert dress that is inappropriate, we give students three options from which they can choose. These uniform options MUST be ordered through the Music Dept. in order to ensure consistency.
OPTION 1: Black Dress
Prices vary by year, but are generally around the $80 price point.
NOTE: Students must supply their own matte BLACK flats (shoes).
OPTION 2: Black Blouse / Palazzo Pants
Prices vary by year, but are generally around the $60 price point.
NOTE: Students must supply their own matte BLACK flats (shoes).
OPTION 3: Black Shirt & Pants w/ RED Tie
Prices vary by year, but are generally around the $60 price point.
NOTE: Students must supply their own matte BLACK dress shoes as well as BLACK socks.
INSTRUMENTALIST UNIFORMS: Formal look is larger of the two, the other is the informal look.
Students MUST provide the following items to use with these uniforms:
black socks
dark black base layer
COLORGUARD UNIFORMS: The formal uniform is used during pre-game and parades.
Students MUST purchase the following items to use with these uniforms:
SUPER DRILLMASTER MARCHING SHOES (Instrumentalists)
STYLEPLUS BALANCE GUARD SHOES (Colorguard)
NOTE: Generally, for colorguard and drum majors there is a show-specific costume that is designed to align with the halftime show theme. For colorguard, a fee is charged that covers a portion of that cost along with the cost of silks. Instrumentalists may be asked to purchase or provide some small costuming element to adorn their uniform. Drum majors usually priovide their own costume or work with the department to obtain suitable costuming.
Uniforms for all ensembles are to be worn in an appropriate fashion. Uniform inspection will be administered by section leaders and/or Directors before performances and other public appearances. Any inconsistencies with the dress code and/or uniform regulations must be remedied before a student will be allowed to perform with the ensemble.
Members are required to wear the complete uniform while in public. The wearing of a partial uniform is not permitted, unless instructed to do so by the directors.
Facial hair should be trimmed and neat.
Keep uniforms clean, wrinkle-free, and hung neatly on a hanger whenever they are not being worn.
Make sure any uniform problems are taken care of before arriving for a performance! There is no time to find uniform parts and make alterations at the last minute!
Regulations for "ALL ENSEMBLES" apply to marching band as well.
The majority of your uniform will be provided for you. Keep track of all uniform parts issued to you. You are responsible for their care and upkeep. Contact "uniform parents" with any problems immediately. The cost of replacement for any damaged or lost uniform part that has been assigned will be assessed to you at the current going rate as communicated to us by the uniform manufacturer.
There are certain parts of the uniform that YOU are responsible for purchasing. See the current year Startup Fee Sheet for required items based on section as well as current costs. If at any time these items are lost or deemed to be at "end of life" you must purchase a replacement.
Winds/Percussion: Calf-length or longer black socks are to be worn with clean black marching shoes.
No visible jewelry other than a single stud in each ear may be worn while in uniform.
Sunglasses may only be worn with permission of the directors.
Long hair must be worn up in the aussie (hat) - when used.
The only permissible headwear in uniform is the uniform aussie, beret, or other officially designated headwear. Nothing else shall be worn visibly on the head by band members unless approved by the staff.
Raincoats will be issued to each member as needed. No other outerwear is permitted during performance without the permission of the directors.
ALTERATIONS TO THE UNIFORM OF ANY KIND ARE NOT ALLOWED WITHOUT THE EXPLICIT PERMISSION OF A DIRECTOR! Any alterations must be performed professionally and in such a manner as to not render the uniform unusable for future students. In general, alterations will be arranged by a representative of the Department.
All uniforms must be kept at school and will be checked periodically for compliance with these regulations.
Certain elements of the uniform can ONLY be professionally dry-cleaned. Please DO NOT wash any part of your uniform unless instructed to do so by a Director or uniform parent.
Informal Uniforms may be worn for certain performances as deemed appropriate by the Directors. These uniforms will be defined within a reasonable time prior to the performance and adherence to the defined uniform is expected.
