What triggered the move to Phase 2.5 in such a short period of time?
These decisions are being made with student safety as the primary consideration. We decided to begin the school year in a more cautious manner for three primary reasons. First, with the number of students choosing in-person learning we are challenged to even meet the 3 ft. social distancing guideline. Second, we believe our safety protocols will be better established by having smaller cohorts of students physically in the building. These protocols are critical to maintaining and expanding in-school learning. Third, we are concerned that if we have too many students in the school too quickly we risk one case leading to a spread of the virus, which could have a much more significant impact on our ability to have students in school.
How can you plan for this new approach by September 9th?
We have been planning all summer for multiple scenarios. The plan for remote learning with in-school supports was always part of our Phase 2 plan. Our biggest challenge is adapting schedules where necessary, but all schools will finalize any modifications to the schedule before school starts.
Why was Phase 2 modified?
Phase 2 was designed to accommodate the condition of smaller groups of students physically in school. Rather than make more drastic reductions to instructional time (everybody gets 2 days of instruction) we decided to use remote instruction for all students but offer in-school supports for any student who struggles to access remote instruction. We modified this phase to include one full day of instruction in-school for all students. We believe this will allow all students to maintain relationships with their teachers and strengthen social connections. It will also allow teachers to engage students in activities that are more difficult to do remotely.
What is your plan for continual reassessment and phasing into Phase 3 learning if infection rates stay low this Fall?
Our plan is to evaluate safety protocols through the month of September and make any necessary adjustments. We will begin to offer opportunities for more students to come into school in a structured way. Our first priority is to be responsive to any student who struggles with remote learning. Students will be invited into school on the in-school support days (Wed-Fri) if it becomes clear they need additional supports for their success.
