Graduation Requirements

Twenty Six (26) credits are required to receive a Milford High School Diploma:

Academic courses are offered at multiple levels to best provide for the educational need of each student.

These levels may include: Advanced Placement, Honors, College-Prep. A, College-Prep. B, and Supported.

English: 4 credits

Four credits of English are required of all students to fulfill graduation requirements (English 9, 10, 11, and 12). Our English courses focus on writing, proofreading, vocabulary, literature, and thinking skills. (Reading lists are available for each course). The English Department also offers several electives to further develop skills in writing, grammar/proofreading, poetry, speaking, journalism, and/or literary analysis.

Mathematics: 4 credits

(two taken Sophomore year)

Four credits of mathematics are required of all students to fulfill graduation requirements.  Many colleges require completion of Trigonometry. In these courses, students develop skills in problem solving and critical thinking.  Placement within mathematics courses are made by teacher recommendation. When considering recommendations, “successful completion” of a course would typically be indicated by a grade of “C” or better.

Science: 3 credits

Science Department courses serve two goals: first, to ensure that students receive sufficient education in science to function effectively as responsible citizens and second, to prepare students pursuing science-related careers with the foundation of facts, concepts, and skills necessary for further education and training.  Every student must have one credit in a physical science, one credit in a biological science, and a third credit in either, for a total of three science credits required to graduate. Any student planning to attend a four year college or train in a science/technical area should complete additional courses.  For most students the following serves as the core required sequence of courses in science:

Students with a high level of interest and aptitude in science may be eligible to participate in an accelerated science program of study. This program allows students to move through science at a faster pace than required, allowing them to take a comprehensive program of college preparatory science. The sequence of classes listed below satisfy the core requirement in science for accelerated students and prepares students to engage in AP course offerings as well.

Social Studies: 3 credits

The Milford High School Social Studies Department offers a variety of required and elective courses in response to student needs and interests.
