School social workers are mental health professionals committed to improving the educational success and the social and emotional development of all students. Some examples of the services school social workers provide are: individual and group counseling, crisis prevention and intervention, consultation with teachers, administrators, and parents, collaboration with community agencies and organizations, program coordination, and development of school-wide protocols that support the health and safety of the entire school community.
School Social Workers and Student Mental Health
The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) notes that schools are often the first (and only) places where a youth's mental health needs may be identified and/or addressed. As a result, school social workers play a critical role in supporting children and families when they are experiencing mental health symptoms or mental health crises. For more information, you can read the SSWAA position statement here.
