In the 2016-2017 school year, Sargent Elementary implemented a Reading Exploration class at the end of the day for students who needed extra support in reading as well as students who were above their reading level to challenge them. K-6 teachers were then assigned a group to work with for 45 minutes. During the 2017-2018 school year the staff decided to add Math as part of the Exploration class. Reading Exploration takes place on Mondays and Tuesdays and Math Exploration takes place on Wednesdays and Thursdays. During this time intervention groups, on level groups and challenge groups meet and do activities, problem solve, and have skill practice. Each intervention group has a timed reading in reading everyday and a timed math fact sheet everyday. The implementation of this program has allowed us to see growth in our students in many ways. Our intervention groups have decreased in numbers in the last 3 years and teachers are seeing favorable results in the classroom and students confidence has also improved in each area. The selection process for the Exploration class is based on student scores, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation.
The 7th and 8th grade Intervention Reading class uses Zoom In curriculum as an intervention to help students that struggle in reading. Students are placed in this class due to test scores such as AIMSweb, MAPS, STAR Reading, state scores, and teacher recommendations. This class takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Since 2015, we have seen a decrease in the amount of students needing this class from 46% to 34%. One observation is the implementation of the K-6 Reading and Math Exploration class has made a big impact on the needs of the students who needs the class. A lot of the students now in the class are students who have been verified: SPED, Title I, PST or ELL.
