Students learned about creating logos for this project and what makes a “good” logo. They read several articles from graphic design journals about the elements needed to create an effective logo. Students also explored the psychology of colors and what they represent. Students took design elements and color psychology into consideration when designing their personal brand or logo.
For this project, students learned about propaganda and how it’s used to persuade others’ opinions on a subject. Students researched their own topic of choice and created a propaganda poster of their own on the subject. The posters are created using a technique called linoleum reduction printing. Students carved and then printed each individual color layer to create the colorful posters you see here. Afterwards students wrote a reflection about their topic and how their message is conveyed through their design.

For this project students learned about a career in surface/pattern design. They learned about the different avenues an artist could take to become a surface/pattern designer and what the job entails. They also discovered that a surface/pattern designer could fall under a variety of job titles. Students researched several surface/pattern designers to understand how they got to where they are today and view their portfolio. Students then created their own pattern and learned how to create a repeating pattern by cutting up their design and reassembling. Students then lined up their pattern and repeated it four times for the final design. Each pattern was meticulously painted with acrylic paint. When students were finished with their painting, they learned how to edit their pattern on Photoshop and line up their pattern another four times to create a professional looking repeated pattern. Some students even got to create an original pattern on Adobe Illustrator and create their own swatch with the design.
