What Is Social-Emotional Learning?

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are essential for the success in school, work and life.

People with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially. From effective problem-solving to self-discipline, from impulse control to emotion management and more, SEL provides a foundation for positive, long-term effects on kids, adults, and communities.

Children thrive. Schools win. Workplaces benefit. Society strengthens. All due to social-emotional learning.

Normal Heights Elementary is continuously building and strengthening our SEL Program, because SEL positively affects all our Hawks' success in school.  Studies show that social-emotional skills-such as problem-solving, self-regulation, impulse control and empathy; helps improve academics, reduce negative social behaviors, for example bullying and create positive classroom/learning environment.

Social-emotional skills helps our youth successfully manage everyday life.  It helps our Hawks focus, make good decisions and become supportive members of their community, beyond their years at NHE and contributing human beings in the world.

As your School Counselor, my role is to implement SEL skills to all our Hawks:

"My mission is to help create good citizens who will grow up to be kind, patient, understanding, compassionate and generous; to themselves and others."
