Salinas High AVID
Program Overview
AVID at SHS is a focused, college-preparatory course. In order to be eligible for AVID students must be first-generation college students, commit to working towards a four-year university as well as making a commitment to maintaining a B average in all their classes. In AVID class, students learn study skills and participate in activities that are aligned with what learners need in order to have a successful high school career and be college ready upon graduation. Every AVID class partakes in Tutorial on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is focused help from the teacher and classmates on what students are having difficulty with in their core classes. AVID teachers are in frequent communication with families about student successes as well as concerns and we work with parents and guardians to support and hold students accountable for their learning.
Throughout the four years, students will go on field trips to different college campuses to see what California schools they may be interested in applying to in their senior year. Additionally, teachers invite guest speakers to speak to classes about different pathways to careers during and after college. In their junior and senior year, students will focus on the process of applying for financial aid and four-year universities.
The AVID program at SHS is an incredible group of close-knit teachers and students working towards a shared goal of four-year university acceptance at the end of students' high school careers.
