Presently, only two grade levels have access to Science Lab Activity space. Successful passage of this referendum would add STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) facilities for all of our students to access. In addition to updating our present Science Lab spaces, it would add a new lab so that all our middle school grade levels (6th, 7th, and 8th) have access, and add student creative experimentation and/or "makerspace" areas (collaborative workspace inside a school for making, learning, exploring and sharing) accessible to all grade levels.
80% of our parents responding to a survey about our school facilities considered the improvement of our Science Lab Facilities and making accessible to all grade levels as a “High Priority” or a “Priority,” giving it the highest level of 12 listed priorities (161 Responses).
Feedback from a Salem Parent: I have two young boys that attend Salem K-8. Currently, this school is not able to provide them the opportunities and exposure to STEM curriculum, skilled trades/technical services industry tools, or Problem-Based Learning with the tools and facilities to be hands-on with activities. Access to this type of learning experience will be a requirement for my family and many other families in this district. The facility and what the updated spaces can provide could be a huge selling point to current and future families.
