The Salem School Board understood that they had a duty to provide Safe and Secure facilities for all of our students. The size and number of additions makes this difficult to do.
A portion of this referendum question asks for funds to implement an automatic door locking/monitoring system, separation doors, and a fire suppression/sprinkler system.
Our present facility has twenty-seven separate entry/exit door areas. There is no ability during an emergency to make sure all of the doors are locked. It is possible that someone could prop a door open from the inside to allow entry without anyone knowing unless they walked the perimeter of the building.
An Automatic Door Locking/Monitoring System connects all doors to a central system that would allow someone from the office to lock all exterior doors immediately and to be notified if a door has been propped open.
Separation doors allow the separate sections of the building to be locked down during an emergency to prevent someone from leaving one area and going into another.
Much of the building was built prior to updated requirements related to Fire Suppression. This would add updated fire suppression capabilities, including sprinkler systems in the remodeled areas.
The areas identified as being out of code compliance related to construction or mechanicals would be updated to current code.
Many exterior areas of the building do not have lighting powered by an emergency power source.
