The Salem School District is a very large, disjointed building that spans several architectural styles, additions, and mechanical systems. This makes maintaining, updating, and growing the building a challenge. The district contracted with Plunkett, Raysich Architects, LLC to conduct a comprehensive facilities study. When Mechanical, Engineering, and Construction professionals surveyed the building in the Spring of 2020, they shared approximately $8 million of priority recommended repairs/updates.
The facilities have been well kept by our outstanding building and grounds staff, but the reality of aging facilities that were built in years ranging from 1916 to 2009, is that there are significant ongoing maintenance needs to keep the facility safe and functioning for student learning.
The most recent building project in 2009—Section 12—puts a nice “false storefront” in view of travelers on Hwy 83 covering up significantly older additions.
Priority 1 Items: $2,619,000
Priority 2 Items: $2,605,000
Priority 3 Items: $2,821,000
Total Identified: $8,045,000

Many of the recommendations from the study are incorporated into the April 5th $18.3m Bonding Referendum Question, along with many improvements.
One aspect is to demolish a small section of the building originally built in 1916 and 1950 (Section 1 and 2). The amount of investment required to transform them into usable space is significant, ongoing heating and maintenance needs are costly for unused space, and it would require over $1 million to make the areas accessible and brought up to code for instructional space.
