Homework Expectations:
In 4th grade, homework consists of any classwork not completed during the day, along with the ongoing expectation that students read for 30 minutes each night. Here’s how homework works in our class:
Classwork first: All assignments are started in class with ample time to complete. Many students may not need to do additional work at home.
Homework folder: Monday through Thursday, students will bring home a homework folder with their assignments. This folder will either show you what they completed in class or indicate which assignments need to be finished at home.
Planner: Each day, before dismissal, we fill out the weekly planner together as a class. Assignments listed in the planner should match what is in the homework folder.
Guardian Check: I kindly ask that guardians review the homework folder each night. If the assignments are complete, please sign in the correct column of the planner (for example, Monday’s assignments in the folder should match what is written under Monday in the planner). If any work is unfinished, please have your child complete it before signing.
Collection: Paper assignments are collected the following day, but students have until Friday to turn in all work for that week.
Late work: If homework needs to be turned in after Friday due to illness, vacation, or other circumstances, please communicate with me. Late work will be accepted but 10% will be marked off for each additional day needed. Students will have one week (5 school days) to turn in any late work. We will not accept any work after that time frame. (In alignment with the school policy, we are not responsible for preparing material, in advance, when you are absent. That being said, we can send your coursework books, iPad, and any material that we have already prepared and on hand.)
As mentioned, paper assignments will come home Monday through Thursday so you can see what students are working on. In addition, students will also have a series of online assignments throughout the week.
Here’s how to access all assignments:
Students receive a Work in Progress (WIP) List each week. This checklist includes a mix of online and paper assignments that must be completed by Friday.
The version posted in the Learning Site tab is only a communication tool for families to view the expected work for the week. By checking the homework folder regularly, you will notice the paper assignments that match what is listed in the WIP section. To check completion of online work, students can use a tablet from home or school to show their progress.
Students can only check off and track their progress directly in Google Classroom.
Accessing the WIP List from Home
Log into Google with your child’s school email and password.
Open Google Classroom and click on Ms. Hansen’s 4th Grade Class.
Go to the Classwork tab.
At the top, use the drop-down menu and select Work in Progress.
Each week’s WIP Checklist will be labeled with the current date. It shows subjects and matching assignments, some on paper and some online. Online assignments are usually completed in class on iPads, but students may need to finish them at home as homework.
👉 To check your child’s progress, have them log in from a home device and open Google Classroom. This way, they can show you which items they have checked off and what still needs to be completed for the week.
Students check off items on their list in Google Class as they complete them.
Parents can view the checklist to see progress.
I will hold short meetings with students throughout the week to review progress.
This work will be tracked as a weekly grade in the grade book.
You can view updates in Google Classroom under Assignment Check-Off List.
