"When we speak of the “environment,” what we really mean is a relationship existing between nature and the society which lives in it. Nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature."

(Pope Francis, “Laudato Sí,” number 139)

"From the moment students arrive at school I try to give them "instant ownership of their room." They need right away to feel known and liked by their teacher. They need to make an impact on the environment, to see that the fact that they are there makes a difference. The children also need to feel comfortable within that environment. "

May 3rd, 2024

Dear Fourth-Grade Families,

Happy Friday! Although we had a short week we made full use of our time together.  The students continued working on their essays, while peer editing and conferencing with classroom members. They also worked hard on their social studies test and Iron Dragon written assessment. They finished the week off with a social studies newspaper project in which they acted as entrepreneurs advertising their new business during the time of the gold rush. All and all it was a great week and we can't wait for next week to start!

Regarding Gold Country, we have confirmation that we will be taking a chartered bus to Gold Country on May 8th and again back to school on May 10th. Thank you to everyone for completing the SHS forms in a very timely manner. I spoke with our trip leader today, Samantha, and she's eagerly awaiting our arrival to Gold Country. She did mention that the mosquitos are present at this time of the year and she would encourage all of us to wear long sleeves, and pants, and bring mosquito repellant (especially at night) when the mosquitos tend to be the worst. She did say that the weather at night gets about ten degrees cooler than what the internet states because we are near the water which provides us with a cooler breeze. That being said, she mentioned that we have some of the best weather predicted for our time at Rock N Water.

She mentioned that we will most likely get a chance to dip in the cool river water so if we wanted to bring an extra pair of T-shirts/shorts it would be advisable to do so.

Regarding supplies such as tents, snacks, etc. please view our 4th grade supply list if you are in a position to lend an item(s). Thank you in advance!

In other news, our May Star Testing dates have been moved to the week of May 13th.

Kind regards,

Dear Fourth-Grade Families,

Happy Friday! We had a fun week this week and can't wait for the next few weeks too. This week we had the chance to spend time in the middle school garden and we also were able to celebrate two birthdays this afternoon. We had the chance to have a few of our students teach various lessons to their peers with their classroom store purchase of "teacher for the day". The students continued working on their essays, and their gold rush unit, and took the unit math test. They are nearing the end of The Iron Dragon Never Sleeps.

Regarding Gold Country, we have confirmation that we will be taking a chartered bus to Gold Country on May 8th and again back to school on May 10th. The SHS Field Trip Forms will be sent out on Monday which we will need to have returned on or before Thursday, May 2nd.

Regarding supplies such as tents, snacks, etc. please view our 4th grade supply list if you are in a position to lend an item(s). Thank you in advance! We will be sending more information out mainly just recapping the information such as the packing list, what time to be at school for the departure on May 8th and the pickup on May 10th.

In other news, our May Star Testing dates have been moved to the week of May 13th.

April 19, 2024

Dear Fourth-Grade Families,

Happy Friday! We can't believe that it's already the 19th of April! We are excited for all that's to come in the next few weeks and we need your help with some important deadlines and volunteering opportunities. The students had a great week working in groups learning about the gold rush, their science graphic novels, and working on their opinion writing essays. They wrapped up the By The Great Horn Spoon novel and began their next novel, The Iron Dragon Never Sleeps. They even had two of their classmates each teach a lesson, of their choice, to them as part of their reward at the Dojo Store too. It was a joy to see the hard work

paired with positive energy at work.

Regarding Gold Country, we have spoken with Rock N Water and they need the final headcount for our field trip. This means that we really need to have all the paperwork in ASAP. Right now, we have 18 students who have completed 100% of the digital CampDocs paperwork. Rock N Water needs all interested students to sign up by next Tuesday, April 23rd. If your child is staying on campus rather than attending the field trip, please email us to confirm that he/she will not be attending. As a reminder, all parent chaperones need to complete the CampDocs paperwork too. Regarding field trip transportation, we are still in communication with the bus company and waiting to get a confirmation with them, As soon as we do, we will communicate the company details and further specifics too. Regarding supplies such as tents, snacks, etc. please view our 4th grade supply list if you are in a position to lend an item(s). Thank you in advance!

In other news, we are thrilled to announce that the 4th grade will be taking over the garden for the rest of the school year! Starting next Thursday, 4/25, the 4th graders will be getting their hands dirty weeding, pruning, and cleaning in the garden. If you have any gloves, clippers or trowels lying around, feel free to send them with your child!

Have a beautiful weekend (in the sun),

We wrapped another week as we ended on a high note with CIA Party! Thank you to our room moms for helping organize this event and for the wonderful volunteers for contributing to the party. The ice cream paired with the comfy clothes free-dress day made the day fun for all!

Keep your eyes peeled for the email regarding Gold Country, which includes a chaperone and supply list. Make sure to get all the necessary documents turned into Camp Docs as soon as possible. Kellie Turturici will be reaching out to make sure those forms are completed! We will be sending the Saint Hilary field trip form home with your child as well next week.

Dear Fourth-Grade Families,

It was a great experience to watch all of our students present at today's Grandparent/VIP Day. We were thrilled to meet and catch up with the visitors who came to connect with us today.

Looking forward to next week, we will start each day with the school-wide elocution presentations. We are excited to hear from all of the students who will be presenting next week. We will also have a social studies test at the end of next week. We will finish our social studies interactive notebook/packet next week and go over the study guide for the test on Friday.

Many people are interested in talking about our upcoming gold country trip. We are in constant contact with our gold-country organization which makes this possible for us to experience this great trip. We have a lot of interest from our parent community and thank you for your support during this time. Again, if you would like to pencil our dates in your schedule for May 8th-10th.

Dear Fourth-Grade Families,

Wow, what a week! First of all, thank you to everyone who made it possible to attend Thursday’s Mission Day presentation. The students worked so very hard to prepare for yesterday and we were thrilled with the sense of pride that the students displayed as they presented their missions. It was great to see them excited as they spoke to parents, teachers, staff members, and other classes of students.

We wanted to give a special thanks to Kellie Turturici and Ashley Calderon who rolled up their sleeves while setting up all of the tables for both the setup and the teardown.

This week we also had our in-class elocution presentations. What a week of oral presentations. Our two students who will be presenting in front of the school will be Ava and Sofia. The school-wide elocution presentations will take place at the morning assembly on 3/18-3/21.

Looking to next week, we start our week with art studio. We will also have our school book fair which will take place during the duration of the school week. There will be a math assessment on Thursday, 3/14. Make sure to review the study guide! We will end the school week with our Grandparents/VIP Day on Friday, March 15th. It’s an exciting time and we look forward to seeing all of the VIPs joining.

Report cards are coming soon, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your student. The grade book is currently transitioning between trimesters, so we, unfortunately, cannot upload any grades for trimester 3 at this time.

Lent

The Lenten season in the Church begins on Ash Wednesday.

The colors we'll see in the church will be predominantly purple to show penance. Since Lent is a time of simplicity and penance, flowers won't be used to adorn our church spaces until Easter-time. Likewise, our prayer tables should take on a simpler, quieter look during Lent.

We'll be receiving ashes on our foreheads at our all-school Mass on Wednesday. We receive ashes on our foreheads in the shape of a cross to remind us of our sinfulness and that we should try to be a better follower of Jesus. These ashes are usually made from the burnt palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday. The cross is not to be wiped/washed off but is to remain on our foreheads until it naturally wears off. This cross is a visible sign to all people that we are followers of Jesus.

Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent, runs until Holy Thursday. Lent is the time when we prepare for and recall Jesus' death on the Cross on Good Friday and ultimately, His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. There are 3 main components to celebrating a meaningful Lent-:

Since Lent is a penitential time, we call to mind our sins and ask God's forgiveness through the sacrament of Reconciliation (also called Confession or Penance).

The colors of Mardi Gras are traditionally purple, green, and gold, and each color has a symbolic meaning:

These colors are prominently featured in Mardi Gras decorations, costumes, and beads, and are also used in the design of the parade floats. They are an important part of the cultural traditions associated with Mardi Gras and the carnival celebrations that take place in many countries around the world.

February is Black History Month.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.

As a Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson, like W. E. B. Du Bois before him, believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice. His hopes to raise awareness of African American's contributions to civilization was realized when he and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925. The event was first celebrated during a week in February 1926 that encompassed the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The response was overwhelming: Black history clubs sprang up; teachers demanded materials to instruct their pupils; and progressive whites, not simply white scholars and philanthropists, stepped forward to endorse the effort.

By the time of Woodson's death in 1950, Negro History Week had become a central part of African American life and substantial progress had been made in bringing more Americans to appreciate the celebration. At mid–century, mayors of cities nationwide issued proclamations noting Negro History Week. The Black Awakening of the 1960s dramatically expanded the consciousness of African Americans about the importance of black history, and the Civil Rights movement focused Americans of all colors on the subject of the contributions of African Americans to our history and culture.

The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation's bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, fifty years after the first celebration, the association held the first Black History Month. By this time, the entire nation had come to recognize the importance of Black history in the drama of the American story. Since then each American president has issued Black History Month proclamations. And the association—now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)—continues to promote the study of Black history all year.

(Excerpt from an essay by Daryl Michael Scott, Howard University, for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History)

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We wrapped up another successful week filled with art studio, reading groups, and a presentation from Rayah Levy about Shabbat today. As we look ahead to next week, we will start the week with a Monday All-School Mass. Typically we have full-dress uniforms required for all-school masses but this Monday we have a school "free-dress hoodie day" in which students can leave their SHS uniform sweater at home.

The unit 4 math tests have been graded and put into the grade book! We will be spending Monday going over the test and correction expectations. Be on the lookout for these tests coming home, as test corrections can turn a grade around if done thoroughly. To receive the maximum amount of points, make sure your child has: the correct answer, units/labels, explanations, and equations where needed. Corrections are due next Friday, 2/2.

Be sure to take a look at all of the important reminders for the upcoming next two weeks. We have listed important special events here too.

The Fourth Grade Team

Reminders:  For the good of the group

Today, we sent home a field trip form for our upcoming guided tour at Mission Dolores. This will take place on Tuesday, February 13th and we would love to encourage parents to volunteer to chaperone. If you are interested in driving, please make sure that all of your needed insurance and SHS forms are completed and submitted to the front office. Please have your children return the forms by Wednesday of next week.

Valentine's Day/Ash Wednesday:

The All-School Valentine's Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 13th due to Ash Wednesday falling on February 14th. That being said, the 4th-grade class will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Thursday, February 15th because we will be on a field trip for the majority of the day. This way, they fully enjoy the Valentine's celebration in their Valentine-themed free-dress wear while passing out their Valentines. Furthermore, the fourth-grade students will be required to attend the field trip in their uniforms.

For our class Valentine distribution:

Next week we welcome the eventful Catholic Schools Week! Each day brings a different theme and has a different theme-based activity.

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We wrapped up a successful week filled with disco ball writing assignments, missions, the study of waves, and more. As we look ahead to next week, we will start the week with a Monday 12:30 pm dismissal and end our week with an all-school PJ spirit day.

Thank you to the parents who brought in large bins for our investigation today. Big shout out to Kellie Nugent for the last-minute delivery! The kids had a blast, even in the cold weather, making waves and testing if they could get their miniature Doritos bags to the other side of their bin. In math, the fourth grade worked hard on their unit 4 assessment, which should be graded and sent home next Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for the test and make sure to do any needed test corrections.

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We hope this message finds you rejuvenated and filled with joyful holiday moments as we embark on a brand-new year together. We trust that the winter break provided each of you with an opportunity to relax, recharge, and create lasting memories with loved ones.

As we look ahead to next week, we will be sending home information regarding the California Missions project. Take some time to discuss with your child Missions of interest to prepare for this exciting project. Spelling will return as well next week, the words are posted on the learning site. We will continue to read our class novel and take our upcoming quiz on Chapters 11-15.

In the realm of math and science, we will be having our unit 4 math test this coming Thursday. We will remind all students to take home their classwork book to study for the assessment. The study guide in their classwork book is a fantastic resource to prepare for the test. We recommend picking out a few of the more complex word problems to practice at home. In science, we will be continuing our waves investigations, but we could use some large clear plastic bins, the kind you use as storage in closets or underneath your bed. If you have a few lying around that you don't mind getting wet, please bring them in!

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We have five school days before starting our Christmas break. Each day presents something special in our schedule. On Monday we will have two art studio sessions. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will have our book with a twist on parent volunteer spots. On Thursday, we will have a fourth-grade PJ day where students are encouraged to wear comfy slippers while in the classroom (they should still bring sneakers for PE). Thursday we will also celebrate our December birthdays. Lastly, on Friday, we will have a holiday gathering and Advent retreat. Friday we will also be saying goodbye to Odin and Ethan as they will not be returning to our class when we resume in January.

We have added a few options for volunteering, in the morning, as we are bringing back the bagel and book club-style morning reading. Parents who are interested in reading a holiday book or two, to the class, may sign up to bring the book and 34 bagels and cream cheese or another similar food item. We do have a severe peanut allergy so please keep that in mind when bringing items to school.

Please take a look at our recent email in which we discussed the trimester two policy for late work. Not much has changed but we will no longer accept late work after seven days. We assign current homework/classwork that is relevant to what the students are learning. Accepting late work after that time does a disservice to the students' learning and adds unneeded stress to both families and teachers. We do a lot of our grading on Fridays, so a great time to check the grade book is over the weekend.

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

What an amazing Halloween week! It was so much fun seeing all the incredibly creative costumes. Huge thanks to the parent volunteers, Mrs. Rockwell, Mrs. Angstenberger, Mrs. Downing, Mrs. Yelverton, and Mrs. Popjevalo, for helping put on such a fun ice cream party for us. So impressed with your kids rebounding from all the trick-or-treating and candy-eating to finish the week strong with a math assessment.

Next week we will be starting our unit on division. For those students who need some extra practice with their multiplication table, keep checking the learning site for various posted resources and games. In science, we will be creating a class-wide Rube Goldberg machine. I have asked students to find materials at home (cardboard, string, egg cartons, etc.) to bring to school. Do not feel the need to buy anything or bring something valuable to school for this project.

In language arts, our students will be presenting their Who Was project final draft in front of their peers. We are also going to be introducing the new book report assignment. We are also very excited to do a school-wide, social studies, presentation on the Native people of California. Make sure to make it to assembly on Friday!

Please make sure to go to bed early and eat a healthy snack as Mr. Lawrence and I will be administering the November STAR tests on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

Mr. Lawrence and I just sat down at our desks and took in the fact that we successfully completed our week of parent-teacher conferences. It was great sitting down with all of you and we very much appreciate the effort that you put in to not only make it a priority to attend but also that you came with great questions and feedback for the two of us. It was a pleasure to hear about what you are doing at home to support your children. We wanted to thank you personally for respecting the requirement of having your children join us for the conferences as well. We believe that conferences are a wonderful way to bridge the home and school connection and with the students present, we were able to have an open discussion about successes and opportunities for growth.

Have an amazing weekend!

The Fourth Grade Team

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

Another week down! The kids settled right into the week despite the long weekend. Hope everyone enjoyed the time off despite the tragedy abroad. Reach out if you'd like assistance in discussing these events with your child.

Next week is conferences. Remember, that students are required to be at the conferences as we will need to cancel the conferences if your child isn't able to attend. We are very excited to host everyone to discuss your child's goals and successes! Make sure to sign up and remember, you can always book a time to meet with other teachers, such as specialists and academic support staff. As these days are half days, remember to pack a hearty snack for your student as there will be no lunch at school.

Have an amazing weekend!

Best,

The Fourth Grade Team

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We have successfully completed our first week of October! It's been great getting into the festive fall spirit and with that came our pastel pumpkin art projects that are now hanging up on our hallway bulletin board. We will have many fun events as we continue with our month of October. As we get closer to Halloween, please refer to our Halloween costume "Rules" which Dr. Bordeleau has shared with the school. We hope everyone has fun plans for the long weekend and we can't wait to hear all about the events of the weekend when we return to school on Tuesday.

Enjoy the time together with your families and we will see you in a few days,

Best,

The Fourth Grade Team

September 29, 2023

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

Thank you for yet another successful week in fourth grade! Thank you to the Gassin, Turturici, and Angstenberge Families who were able to volunteer in our Maker's Space today. We hope everyone had a good time blessing their various pets this morning. We had a great time wearing our Decades-themed spirit wear as we wrapped up the week. As we look towards next week, keep an eye out for the parent-teacher conference signups, and remember that your child will be joining and participating in the conferences this year.

Water Bottles and Friday Folders: In classroom housekeeping, please make sure that you send your son or daughter with a water bottle every day! We are noticing that several students do not have water bottles. As you may have noticed, the Friday folders were sent home last Friday. Please make sure to return those by this Friday. Those papers can be left at home as they are graded.

Service Hours: We are still waiting to hear more information regarding the volunteer hours information. We will pass on the information as soon as we hear anything further. That being said, each student does need to complete the five hours of service.

Star Testing: The Star Testing parent letters will be sent home next week instead of being shared at parent-teacher conferences. Please take a look in your mailbox, not email, for the printed Star Tests.

Content Area Focus for next week:

ELA:

Math: Introduction to Unit Two (multiplication), Mega Mansion Project

Social Studies: California Native Peoples and the Six Cultural Areas of California

Science: Rube Goldberg Projects

September 24, 2023

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

Thank you for yet another successful week in fourth grade! It was an eventful week that was kicked off by our first art studio. Thank you to the Allen, Gassin, and Reedy Families who were able to volunteer for those lengthy art studio slots. The projects will be on display in the near future and we can't wait for you to see them. Thank you to the families who were able to assist their children in selecting a Who Was? book within their individualized good fit reading range. While it was an initial challenge, it is required that the students select one of over 200 books in the Who Was? series within the appropriate reading range. This range is key when pairing comprehension with reading ability so that each person will gain the most understanding from what they are reading. This week, students will be sent home with their flip book book report. Please see the language arts tab on the learning site to see how to complete and organize the flipbook in the appropriate order. You may type, print, cut, and glue the responses it into the appropriate pages too if that's easier.

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We just wrapped up our third week of school and we are well on our way! It's been great getting to know each of our students and we are eager to continue to learn more about each of them. We hope that you were able to open and read our recent email. If you weren't able to open it, please find it below. Each week, you will find a quick note, listed on this page,  with any quick information pertaining to the fourth-grade classroom. This might pertain to short days, field trips, upcoming new units of study, or volunteer opportunities. Please make sure to continuously check the specific subject tabs as study guides, if applicable, or new information will be posted there when we introduce new material.

If you are looking for the current spelling words to practice over the weekend, please check the Language Arts tab and you will find the words there. They are posted by Sunday evening, each week.

For this upcoming week, we have just a few reminders:

Looking Ahead:

Again, we look forward to continuing to put faces to the names of our fourth-grade parent community and we can't wait to see everyone next week!

Email: A Message from your Fourth Grade Teachers:

"Dear Fourth Grade Families,

It has been such a pleasure working with your kids these past two weeks! We are thrilled to host you all next Wednesday for Back to School Night but wanted to send along some essential information beforehand.

First and foremost, please bookmark our class's learning site, which holds important information such as daily/weekly homework, Google Classroom codes, daily agendas, and announcements for the week ahead. If your student is out of school, please refer to the daily agenda to see what work they may have missed!

Our grade book is also a great resource to stay up to date on your student's progress. Beyond just showing grades in each subject, the gradebook is a useful tool to see which assignments are missing.

Lastly, we have included a Google Forms parent questionnaire that we would love to have you complete at your earliest convenience. This questionnaire will provide the two of us with more insight regarding each of your wonderful children and we would love to hear your thoughts.

Again, we look forward to continuing to put faces to the names of our fourth-grade parent community and we can't wait to see everyone next week!

Kind regards,

The Fourth Grade Team"

Our apologies as our service learning slide skipped during our presentation. We are speaking with the front office because we've noticed some inconsistencies with expectations for the fourth grade service hours. When we hear back from FAB and Dr. Bordeleau we will pass that information on.

Thank you again to everyone who made it possible to spend the evening with us for our B2SN presentation.
