CONCERT BAND 9 - 12

Concert Band allows the continuation of playing and performing in a large ensemble. Students will rehearse and perform a variety of styles of music from Popular, Marches, Classical and Jazz to explore and create understanding of musical genres. Through rehearsing in a group, skills in sight-reading, technique, tone development and intonation, rhythmic clarity and articulation will be taught and practiced. Due to the combination of grades in this course students can develop their personal learning skills from intermediate to advanced while being challenged to the next level. Communicating and documenting student growth is provided in various performances throughout the year demonstrating the connection of being involved in a group. Being involved in a large ensemble develops many life skills and friendships.  There is no better way to get your brain ready for school than starting the day playing music. This class is offered in the morning outside the timetable for 4 credits. 

MUSIC PRODUCTION 10 - 12 (Level 1)

This class looks deeper into history, culture, music theory, and technology. Using technology and musical knowledge students will create musical works on various Digital Audio Workspaces. Solo and group exploration of what music offers to identity and self-belonging within society will develop their understanding of music. Units in this class include: musical genres and history, elements of sound, composition, and ethics in the music industry. Students who enjoy creating, can take this course multiple times to explore their creativity in relation to digital music. This class is offered inside the timetable. 

MUSIC PRODUCTION 10 - 12 (Level 2)

This course is intended for those who have taken Music Production LEVEL 1 and are wanting a deeper knowledge of music theory, chord progressions and voicings, DAWS, science and sound, and exploring the music industry. Using similar projects as level 1 students will be expected to create music with more science, effects, personal recordings, and deeper exploration. This class is offered inside the timetable. 

JAZZ BAND 9 - 12

This instrumental music class offered is an extension of concert band as it requires students to be registered in concert band as well as jazz band. Jazz band expands on the ensemble connections and skills taught in concert band developing difficult syncopation, improvisation, soloing over chord progression, and adapting to different styles of jazz. Music will be selected from Blues, Rock, Latin, and Funk. Jazz band is limited to the following instruments: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. This ensemble performs regularly in the school, community, jazz festivals, and on possible jazz trips. This class is offered in the morning outside the timetable for 4 credits.

VOICE - CHORAL MUSIC 9 - 12

This class allows students to develop their voice in a safe group environment. Students will rehearse and perform a variety of styles of music from Popular, Broadway, Classical and Jazz to explore and create understanding of musical genres. Due to the combination of grades in this course students can develop their personal learning skills from beginner to advanced singer. Students will develop their musical knowledge and ability to sing in a group with harmony and blend. Communicating and documenting student growth is provided in various performances throughout the year demonstrating the connection of being involved in a group. This class is offered outside the timetable for 4 credits. 

GUITAR 9 - 12

Learn the basics of the guitar! This course is focused on students who want a general knowledge of music through the guitar. Students will learn basic techniques to allow them to develop their guitar skills to continue whatever venue of guitar playing they may want to explore. As an ensemble class students will be required to demonstrate growth in each unit. Chords, finger picking, ear training, and composition will all lead to the skills needed to start a band, play at a campfire, or just express oneself. Students who have had experience on the guitar will be permitted to take the course with the understanding that they will be taking a leadership role and doing some independent work at a higher level. No previous music knowledge needed. This class is offered inside the timetable for 4 credits.
