Like most high school juniors, we are quite stressed. Luckily for us, we are not the flies in our experiment who are purposely stressed. We've been continuing to study our stress no treatment flies and have filmed 20 flies. As a reminder, we put our flies into solitary confinement into individual vials (Pic 1) for a week and heat shock them for 10 minutes to stress them out.
After months of working with flies and stress (see Blog 1 & 2), we can finally add another factor to our research: CBD. We found out that our high precision scale cannot accurately measure 1 miligram of CBD, so we've changed our dosage of CBD to be a range between 1-2 miligrams. The CBD is added to the upper layer of the fruit fly media (Pic 2). If you don't know why we only put CBD into the upper layer, check out Blog 2. We've been working diligently, and began every trial for our CBD experimental group this week. Every day this week, we've isolated flies into CBD-infused vials. Next week, after the solitary confinement period has ended, we will film all the flies.
On this website, we've mentioned that we freeze flies to anesthetize them and transfer them to individual vials. However, we never stated how we transfer the frozen flies to individual vials. Unlike our regular flies (see Blog 2), we must use a tool to transfer these fragile flies. Our secret weapon? A paintbrush. Look at the gif to see how a paintbrush helps our research!
