To have our research approved, we had to pitch our proposal to a panel of scientists and teachers on September 9. After waiting with bated breath, we found out we were approved with revision! The only adjustment we have to make is the time when we expose our fruit flies to CBD. Instead of administering the CBD during a recovery period after stressing the flies, we will administer CBD throughout the trial (the week of solitary confinement and 10 minutes in the incubator for heat stress).
After we were approved, we began to conduct pretrials on September 30 (once we finished our lengthy paper work!). Before we began, we also had to age our flies in order to properly replicate our experimental trials. On our first day, we separated two flies into their own individual vials and added 1 mg of CBD to the media to determine if we can use this amount of CBD in our experiment. We will continue to observe any mortality in the flies for a week, but as of now, they are alive and well! On October 2, we started our incubator trials, where we separated two flies into their own individual vials and placed them in the incubator at 37°C for ten minutes to ensure this temperature does not kill our flies. We took the two vials out after ten minutes and the flies were alive, a little stressed, but alive!
