I did a quick interview with Mrs. Vangala during National School Librarian Month in April to find out details about her experience before working as a librarian at Rye Neck, and her current experience from working at Rye Neck.
Q: What was your journey/life like before working at Rye Neck?
A: This was my first full-time job in the US after immigrating from India.
Q: Why did you decide to become a librarian?
A: I was looking for clerical job positions, and I found this job by luck. I am not a certified librarian.
Q: How long have you been working at Rye Neck, and how has the library changed over time?
A: This is my 23rd year of working here. The library used to have more physical books and encyclopedias. The library used to receive thousands of books a year before going digital. In the past, requisitions for supplies were prepared on a typewriter but now done online. Most of the resources are now electronic and available online through Sora/Overdrive. Earlier, there were no chromebooks for students. Over time, the library has changed into a social space with the library cafe.
Q: What skills (technical/social) have you gained while working as a library clerk?
A: I improved my overall tech skills and navigation of the web and google applications. Most importantly, I gained social skills especially through my connection with the students.
Q: What are the easiest/hardest aspects of your job?
A: Checking out chromebooks is the easiest aspect, and overall student management is the hardest part as a careful balance of firmness and fairness is required.
Q: If you were given the chance to go back in time and choose a different job, would you? If so, what would it be?
A: I would choose this job because I love being a small part of the development of children into accomplished adults. I love the opportunity to interact with the students and the staff who are all dedicated to the welfare of the students.
Mrs. Vangala has been an integral part of the management of the library, school supplies, and technology at Rye Neck. During her time working here, she has seen drastic changes to the library, and she was a constant. Overall, she ensures the smooth running of the library and materials that are essential to the education of students at Rye Neck.
