In this exploratory course students will explore Hispanic culture by learning about different Spanish speaking countries. Additionally, students will be exposed to various celebrations within the Hispanic community.

The Spanish I-A and I-B meet every other day and the courses across both grades 7 and 8 are the equivalent of the first year of high school Spanish I. Upon successful completion with a grade of “C-” or better of Spanish I-B, the student will be eligible to receive one credit for high school Spanish I and enroll in Spanish II in grade 9.

This course is the first half of a two-part series in World Language. It is designed to further explore the Spanish culture and language within the context of the Spanish speaking world. The focus is on the four skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking which will help students with their development of a strong linguistic foundation on which to build their study of the Spanish language.

Learn the Spanish alphabet

Unit 2: Las descripciones
Describe themselves and others using adjectives
Talk about ages & birthdays
Talk about things they like with the verb gustar with nouns
Use definite articles
Complete a Colombia Webquest
Unit 3: Las actividades
Talk about what they like to do with the verb gustar and verbs
Talk about what they want to do with the verb querer and verbs
Discuss the weather in Spanish
Use adverbs of frequency to describe how often they do things
Use the verb ir with places, verbs, and time phrases
Conjugate present tense verbs
Complete a Puerto Rico webquest

Discuss their school subjects and supplies
Use indefinite articles
Learn tener idioms
Complete a Costa Rica webquest

Talk about their family and describe relationships within family
Talk about various occupations
Describe their houses and the rooms/furniture found within
Tell about where they live
Correctly use prepositions that tell location
Talk about chores and daily routines in the house
Use negation vocabulary
Correctly use possessive adjectives
Unit 6: La Comida
Name breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert foods
Describe how different foods taste
Talk about table settings and what items you would find on the table
Discuss what they prefer as opposed to what they want
Order items off of a menu in a restaurant
Correctly use the verbs Ser and Estar
Unit 7: La Higiene Personal
Name body parts
Use vocabulary associated with morning routines/personal hygiene
Talk about how they are feeling-if they are well or if they are sick-and what symptoms they are experiencing
Understand the different tener expressions/idioms
Correctly use and conjugate reflexive verbs, including sentirse
Unit 8: La Ropa/Ir de compras
Name their clothing and accessories
Talk about the colors, materials, and sizes of clothing
Count from one hundred to one million
Use vocabulary associated with different stores and shopping
Correctly use the verb quedar and the verb costar
