Instrumental Music provides 6th grade students with a comprehensive introduction to performing a musical instrument both individually and within an ensemble. Through a combination of theoretical, fundamental, and performance based learning, students will learn concepts of music theory, instrument technique, and develop ensemble skills. This course is intended as an introduction to instrumental music where students will participate in performance opportunities throughout the year.

Choral Music provides 6th grade students with a comprehensive introduction to performing vocal music within an ensemble. Through a combination of theoretical, fundamental, and performance based learning, students will learn concepts of music theory, vocal technique, and develop ensemble skills. This course is intended as an introduction to choral music. There will be several performance opportunities throughout the year.
Students in 7th grade will continue their choral music experience by participating in Concert Choir. Students will refine their skills as they develop advanced techniques, nuanced expression, and ensemble dynamics while singing diverse and rigorous musical selections. 7th & 8th grade choirs will be combined for performances.

The middle school general music courses are designed to hit upon different elements from the four artistic processes that are the foundation of the National Core Arts Standards: creating, performing, responding, and connecting. Throughout their time in middle school, students will be able to experience music in a variety of ways, which will continue to cultivate their love for music.
Students will explore music, culture, and history as they travel through the 20th century. Students will learn about iconic styles of music and dance, famous musicians of the era, and other important pop culture elements. This experience will have students dancing through the evolution of music.
Students will explore music, instruments, and cultures from around the world through an interdisciplinary and multi-sensory approach to learning. Throughout the course, students will study both Western and Non-Western styles of music and instruments. Areas of study will have natural crossovers to disciplines within the Arts and disciplines outside of the Arts.
Students will have an interactive exploration of music from our cinematic history. From animated to live action, students will learn about composers who shaped the film industry, iconic theme songs that brought characters to life, and learn how music affects what you watch.
Students will delve into the heart of GarageBand, unraveling its interface intricacies and functionalities. From recording and editing techniques to the exploration of virtual instruments and music theory, each lesson is a stepping stone towards unleashing creativity. Aspiring music producers will delve into sound design, podcast production, and advanced techniques, culminating in collaborative projects that emphasize effective teamwork. The course crescendos with the polishing of final projects, providing students the opportunity to showcase their artistic evolution. Through a blend of hands-on assignments, collaborative endeavors, and peer evaluations, students
will not only master the technical aspects of GarageBand but also nurture their unique creative voices.
Instrumental & Choral Music are year long performing ensembles for our 6th grade students. Each ensemble is designed to teach students how to read music, develop instrument/vocal technique, and learn how to perform within a group. Students will work on a variety of music throughout the year for performance.
As part of a quarter Encore rotation, 6th grade students will have the opportunity to journey through iconic music decades of the 20th century. Starting with the 1950’s, students will study music icons and styles of music, learn iconic dances, the “latest” fashion trends, and discuss cultural/societal movements that impacted music of the time. This interactive experience will have students dancing through the decades and expanding their musical horizons.
Concert Band and Concert Choir are year long performance ensembles for our 7th and 8th grade students. These ensembles will continue to grow and challenge our developing musicians. Students will continue working on their music literacy and performance skills as they prepare more challenging music for performance. If interested, students will have the opportunity to participate in both Concert Band & Concert Choir.

This semester course is offered as an Encore choice for 7th grade students. In this course, students will explore music, instruments, and cultures from around the world. As we travel from place to place, students will engage in conversations about what they know about that particular part of the world in terms of historical facts, iconic geographical and/or architectural features, traditions, foods, and other relevant information. After that, we will explore how each culture has contributed to the Arts through music, art, dance, and/or theater.
This semester course is offered as an Encore choice for 8th grade students. Throughout this course, students will explore music from our cinematic history. Students will learn about composers who shaped the film industry, iconic theme songs that brought characters to life, and learn how music affects what you watch and how you feel. As part of the course, we will be watching movie clips from a variety of genres. All clips will be school/age appropriate. Iconic films and character themes that fall under the Thriller/Horror genre will be discussed in terms of character and mood without visual aids.

Over the course of a semester, 7th and 8th grade students are going to have a blast exploring everything GarageBand has to offer. They’ll get to know how to record and tweak their own music while playing with all sorts of virtual instruments. Students will dive into the world of sound design, create their own podcasts, and learn some pretty neat tricks along the way! This course is packed with hands-on activities and team projects design to help students really understand GarageBand and find their own unique musical style.
