RSD17 Summer Learning

Summer is coming!  In a few short weeks teachers will be saying goodbye to their students and sending them off to the next grade level.  We all want to dive right into the summer fun!   Continuity of learning is important to prevent summer learning loss.  Studies show students lose a portion of the skills and knowledge they gained during the school year if they don’t read and practice math over the summer.  As a district, we have created a summer learning plan for all students grades K-8 which includes both reading and math.  All materials can be found on this website by clicking on the grade level that your child is entering in the fall.  In addition to the summer reading and math materials, you will find alternate learning experiences such as project-based learning and links to Personalized Computer Adaptive Programs the students had access to during distance learning.

We hope that you find the site user-friendly, and helpful as you navigate these learning opportunities through the summer. Please reach out to Jbeermuender@rsd17.org (reading) or hrigatti@rsd17.org (math) with any questions you may have.

Enjoy your summer and we look forward to seeing you all in the fall!

RSD17 Curriculum Coordinators

Students who have a personalized pathway for iReady reading and/or math may continue to use their pathway in the summer through Sunday, August 20, 2023.  Weekly usage is 45 minutes to yield maximum results.

iReady pathways are not actively monitored during summer months this year.  If an issue arises, please reach out to RSD17 Curriculum Coordinators, Jenn Beermuender jbeermuender@rsd17.org or Heather Rigatti hrigatti@rsd17.org.  Thank you!

CSDE Summer Learning Hub 2023

Summer can be a time for K-12 students to choose and finish their own adventure in learning. The Summer Learning Hub is a place to fine one or more adventures in the form of a challenge.  These challenges give students engaging options and opportunities across many subjects. They help sharpen knowledge important for academic success in the fall.  Challenges include a mixture of plugged and unplugged activities that students complete, answering questions like:

Summer learning challenges are done in partnership with the local school district. Each spring, district superintendents invite students and families to learn more about the challenges of summer learning. Whether students enjoy reading, math, social studies or science, the Summer Learning Hub has enriching activities for everyone.   ~ Dr. Joanne White, CSDE

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons and Activities

Heggerty Summer Support

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons can continue during the summer months as language play activities built into your child's day. Phonemic awareness is an oral and auditory activity, so these activities can be a fun way to play with the sounds we hear in words. It is important for children to understand that the words they hear in language are made up of sounds. This will support them in connecting print or letters to the sounds they hear when they read or spell words.

This summer, through August 31st, we are offering free access to written sample lesson plans that can be downloaded or printed for educators and parents to lead lessons at home. We are also sharing a selection of free lesson videos so that students can work with one of our literacy specialists who will engage your child in word play activities during each lesson.
