Summer Math

Studies have shown that during the summer break following a typical school year, students may see a 27-50% loss of the annual progress that was made in math. Well, we are sure you would agree that this was definitely not a typical school year...so, these percentages have the potential to be much higher.

The HK Math teachers want to help you avoid this!

We are suggesting a plan that we believe will help you minimize this potential loss of skills and/or content knowledge. Any and all effort that you put into this will help to decrease potential knowledge loss and set you up for a smooth transition to your next math class. We know that you can rise to this challenge...look what you have just accomplished this past spring- a far greater challenge than the one we are asking you to do. Please reach out to your teacher if you have any questions...we are here to support you!

For students entering Algebra 1

Students entering grade 9 Algebra 1 may benefit from math practice. This would be great for students who are feeling like they need some review.

One place for video lessons, practice and checks for understanding is Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/. One thing we like about their program is that it provides immediate feedback. As the student does each set of practice problems, the system tells if the answer is correct or incorrect. When incorrect, they can try again, see how the math is worked out and why their answer is incorrect or move on.

Students taking Algebra 1 in Grade 9 should use the course "Get Ready for Algebra 1."

https://www.khanacademy.org/math/get-ready-for-algebra-i

Topics include algebraic equation basics, inequalities, combining like terms, distributive property, two-step equations, equations with variables on both sides, ratios, rates, linear relationships, functions, exponents, irrational numbers and quadratics.

For students entering Algebra 2/Algebra 2H

We recommend that you start by working through the 2020 Entering Algebra 2- Summer Review , check your answers using the solution key (contained at the end of the same document), and identify your specific areas of weakness.

Once you have this information, we recommend that you review/reinforce your algebra 2 skills in one of two ways:

  1. Take the Algebra 1 "Course Challenge" on Khan Academy (Algebra I | Math). This will further identify areas of weakness and provide an individualized path for learning. This path will include links to video lessons as well as practice sets to work through at your own pace. As you progress through the work, you will be given opportunities to "level up" by taking the Challenge again….eventually whittling down to no more struggles!!

  2. If you would prefer to work through only those specific skills identified by your work on the 2020 Entering Algebra 2- Summer Review, you can use the 2020 Algebra 1 Khan Lesson & Video Support Links document to focus only on these topics.
