Grade 6 Summer Math
Expectations for middle school math: Students have 2 choices:
(1) “Getting Ready for nth Grade” Khan Academy course (recommended by CT Dept of Ed)
Complete units of study and log your mastery checks on Khan Academy. This is the preferred method as we can easily track progress.
Get Ready for 6th Grade - class code H642SEJP
(2) Summer Math Packet
Complete a set of engaging problems that cover a variety of topics. (Link below)
If parents or students prefer a paper packet, copies can be sent home and are available in the school office.
Please bring in a completed packet on the first day of school or we can access your digital log of Khan Academy mastery checks. You will work with a team to do a task (create a game, make a reference card, do a presentation, etc.) about one topic that you reviewed and earn a participation grade in PowerSchool for your summer efforts. Here is the rubric showing how students will be assessed on this task.
In addition, students who already have a license for iReady "My Path" can continue to use it through August 20, 2023. Enjoy!
TIPS and SUPPORT
If your child needs additional support with the some of the topics in the summer math packet, here are some references:
(1) Google Classroom - Your child may be able to access the Google Classroom from their math teacher last year. There may be references there.
(2) Ready Classroom - Math workbooks were sent home at the end of the school year in June. Your child can also access the digital version of the workbook by logging into iReady and choosing "Bookshelf" on the bottom. The bookshelf has the pages from the workbook and a section called "My Videos" with instructional videos.
(3) Math Antics - website with short instructional videos modeling examples on most topics
(4) Check your answers - See the last page of the packet for an answer key!
Students in grades 6-8 can continue to use IXL through August 16, 2024. Weekly usage is 45 minutes to yield maximum results.
IXL use is not actively monitored during summer months this year. If an issue arises, please reach out to RSD17 Curriculum Coordinators, Jenn Beermuender jbeermuender@rsd17.org or Heather Rigatti hrigatti@rsd17.org. Thank you!
Multiplication and Division Facts
It is crucial that students know their multiplication and division facts for middle school. Fluency frees up their working memory so they can devote it to problems solving and learning new concepts and skills.
See the reference below for ideas. Here's a great one - https://www.timestables.com/
Please practice your facts at home!
The Connecticut State Department of Education offers the Commissioner's Summer Math Challenge. The Summer Math Challenge is a free program that helps your child practice math skills taught during the school year. When you enroll your child, you’ll get access to daily fun activities and resources designed for your child’s grade and ability level. There are choices, too!
The Summer Math Challenge runs from June to August 31, 2023.
