Most people think of home as one of the safest places to be. Yet many preventable injuries happen in homes just like yours/mine. Why is that? Well, for starters, not everyone knows the basic rules of safety, and sometimes those who do know the rules choose not to follow them.
Preventable Injuries: such as cuts, falls, burns, and broken bones can occur in a variety of ways. Eating, drinking and playing are also potential hazards of regular activities we all engage in. Choking and poisoning are potential hazards in every home. Being mindful of how we eat, drink, and play are important steps to our safety at home.
Items To Watch Out For: Homes are full of useful items that can harm us, if we use them in a way that we are not suppose to. Parents always advice their children not to touch certain things in the home, but as a refresher be aware of the danger that can come from following:
Household items like curling iron, clothes iron, hair dryers, toasters, hand mixers, carving knives, plastic bags, knives, plug sockets, can be harmful, handle with care.
Other items like lawnmowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, saws, staple gun, drills, screwdrivers, firearms/guns, barbecues, backyard swimming pools, hot tubs, and cleaning chemicals can be harmful, handle with care.
Farm machinery may also be dangerous, do not play near or around these machines, stay safe.
All of the above can damage or cause physical harm.
Young children should not touch appliances without their parents' permission and should be supervised at all times in or outside the home.
