Mrs. Choi

Welcome to the second grade and Mrs. Choi's class! It is going to be a fun year full of learning and new adventures!

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Joy Choi, and I am originally from South Korea and have lived in Austin for 23 years. My wonderful husband and I are the proud parents of two children, Kevin and Hannah. And we also have two adorable dogs named Toby and Annie! I enjoy spending time with my family. On weekends we are often hiking, kayaking, or doing anything active outside.

It has always been my dream to become a teacher. Over my career, I have taught Pre-K, Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. I am very excited to start my  12th year at Laurel Mountain and my 16th year of teaching.  I have a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Education from Concordia University Texas and I am certified to teach Pre-K through sixth grade, English as a Second Language, and Talented and Gifted students. Before teaching here, I began teaching in Austin in 2008. I spent 3 years teaching at a private preschool and also spent a year in Puna, India at an international school.  

I love working in the primary grades and creating the foundation students need to be successful readers and writers. It is wonderful and rewarding to be able to guide students through this period of huge developmental gains. I am so grateful that my cultural background is viewed as a strength at Laurel Mountain Elementary and I am honored to be part of the Laurel Mountain second-grade team.

I will do my best to make this school year an enjoyable time for your child and a time filled with learning. I look forward to meeting and getting to know each of my students and their families. Our classroom will be a place of celebration and highlighting the strengths of each child!
