Over the past two decades, Roslyn High School's sports teams have improved dramatically. It's not uncommon to find the Bulldogs in a playoff bracket or taking home a 1st place trophy. But many of RHS' sports facilities are outdated or in disrepair.
To address the issue, Roslyn has broken ground on a major renovation project that will result in a new baseball field, new soccer field, and new tennis courts. Max Cohen tells the story of how the work got started, how much it will cost, and why, he thinks, it's worth every penny.
Flag football is a sport on the rise, increasing in popularity everyday. Its recognition in high school sports however is not as noticeable as you’d think. Just three years ago in 2022 flag football was introduced into high schools on Long Island, and in 2023 it was deemed a championship sport, adding to its legitimacy. In the same year of this new addition, Roslyn High School gained its own flag football team, giving the women in the school an opportunity to play football on a varsity level.
In the teams’ inaugural season, the Bulldogs finished with a 1-10 record, with its first ever win coming against Roosevelt by a score of 12-6. Moving into the Bulldogs’ second season, sophomore wide receiver Regan Glick was listed as one of the top 50 flag football players on Long Island by Newsday. The Bulldogs ended with a 4-8 record, securing them the 6 seed in their conference playoffs. Unfortunately, their playoff run would end as soon as it started, with East Rockaway coming out on top 14-0 to advance.
However, this year has been a huge jump from previous results. Glick would once again be listed as a top 50 player on Long Island entering her junior year, and she would be joined by one of her teammates, junior quarterback Rielle Solop. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a record of 11-3, securing them the 4 seed in the conference playoffs. Once again, the Bulldogs would fall in the first round, this time to Glen Cove 25-13. The highlights of the season have been key wins over MacArthur and Bethpage. On May 13th, MacArthur was ranked 16th in the New York State Class B rankings and Bethpage was ranked 19th in Class B according to the NYSSWA (New York State Sports Writers Association). Roslyn came in as an honorable mention, putting them under the statewide spotlight.
In this episode of the Roslyn Roundup, we will touch upon the creation of Flag Football, and its progress in high schools on Long Island. Additionally, we will highlight the progress of the Roslyn Girls’ Flag Football team, and how they have progressed over time and what they have done to improve.
