Historically, school discipline would lead people to understand that the Dean of Students is a strict disciplinarian. Students think of high school as a place with strict teachers, chaotic lockers, and detention rooms one would do anything to avoid.
But that is not always the case. Leaders like Ms. Stuber, the new Dean of Students at Roslyn High School, are working to change this perception. She’s redefining her approach to discipline by focusing on helping students grow and outline their goals.
According to Sandra M. Way in an article from The Sociological Quarterly, “A positive relationship with teachers may be related to how students view the fairness and legitimacy of the school's discipline policy and practices.” It becomes clear that when teachers build positive relationships with students the result is fewer problems and better behavior.
This is what Ms. Stuber is trying to achieve.
