Welcome to English

What will we be doing in Year 7?

In Year 7 English, you can expect to encounter new poetry, prose and drama and have some opportunities for creative writing.  We will also brush up your literacy skills and support you in finding new texts to read for pleasure, with the help of our library, librarian, and fortnightly reading lessons.

Your lessons will involve group discussion, debate, online collaborative work using laptops, and project work. During these lessons you will start to put down a foundation of important skills for future study.  We can’t wait to meet you and get you started on your English journey!

Below is a list of books, documentaries, films and websites and locations that you could engage with, if possible, to develop your subject knowledge on topics you will cover in Year 7.

Read

Well written articles from reputable news media sites.  Discuss what you’ve read at home and consider what you’ve learned and how the information was written.  Who wrote it and what was their message?

Whatever you read, read for pleasure.  Don’t force yourself to read something because you feel you should - find something that you genuinely enjoy, whatever it may be.

Watch

Shakespeare!  If you can, watch a filmed version of a Shakespeare play.  Comedy, tragedy or history - the choice is yours.  It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand it all - just immerse yourself.

Poetry recitals.  Start with John Agard and fall down a rabbit hole - many poets upload their poetry performances online and they will help you to get used to the variety of poetry that exists.
