IB is an extremely helpful program that is widely accepted as a university standard, and can improve college application as well as the time college takes for many students, some of whom finish their undergraduate degree in 3 years.
IB Students from Oakmont historically have done very well in their college applications. While we can never guarantee admission to a particular college or program, we can state that over 80% of our students get into one of their top choice colleges. The IB Program's benefits with regard to College are three fold:
Makes the application stronger, as it is an internationally recognized program of excellence and rigor
Prepares students for success for college level work. Students continually report back that their IB experience at Oakmont prepared them for success in their university programs.
The potential to earn college credit for IB Exams that are taken during high school (every college is different with regard to what they accept. Please check with universities directly for information about their acceptance policies.)
Below you will find additional information about IB and the University application process, as well as information about the benefit of IB in general.
Below is a spreadsheet for the basic IB policies of popular colleges on the CommonApp (plus the UC's). It's important to consider that although some colleges do not accept credit for the exams, taking IB classes and their corresponding exams almost always strengthens applications by demonstrating commitment to learning and ability to handle college-level classes. Additionally, if the student gets a high score on an exam relevant to their major, it should be encouraged that they negotiate policy for the possibility of exemption from entry-level classes.
Please be aware this list is currently a work in progress and will be added to as we continue to work on it.
