Letters of Recommendation

BEFORE REQUESTING A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

• Do you need a letter of recommendation? Letters take a lot of time and effort, so make sure one is required before you ask.

  • California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) schools do NOT require letters.

If you need a letter of recommendation for your college application or scholarship program:

• • Ask you recommender IN PERSON if they would be willing to write you a letter or recommendation, DO NOT ASSUME. Provide them the link or add them to the application system, so they have access to the recommendation.

  • Complete the recommendation packet below and give it to your recommender ahead of time.

• The information you provide will be used to illustrate your most salient characteristics, so be sure to fill out the packet completely. Remember to be mindful.

• People who write letters need at least a two-week notice. A late request will result in either a hastily written letter or no letter.

• Letters will be written in the order in which the completed packets are received. Consider the time and effort that your teachers and counselors are putting into your letter. A thank you is always a nice gesture.
