EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL
Click/Tap on the top right corner of graphic to expand.
High school students, regardless of age, who register for college courses are subject to the same privacy rights and student conduct expectations as other college students.
For students interested in CONCURRENT Enrollment
High school students are responsible for their own academic and personal success in Concurrent Enrollment. Students must be proactive and capable of managing most of their tasks independently. Your counselor can provide guidance, however, most questions should be addressed with the college of attendance.
Meet with your counselor to discuss your interest.
College classes will go on your permanent college record! You and your counselor will meet to go over your goal and ensure college courses fit into your academic plan. Keep in mind, high school counselors cannot complete the concurrent process for the student. The student must do the research, registration, and communication with the college.
Complete a college application with the intended college and for the appropriate college term.
All California Community Colleges offer Concurrent Enrollment for high school students.
Student is responsible for reviewing the college's schedule of classes, procedures and deadlines, and other processes the college has in place. For questions, reach out to the college of attendance.
Complete and submit any forms required by the college.
Most colleges have a form that requires the student, parent, and school designee signatures. The form and process will usually be found on the college's concurrent enrollment webpage.
Give yourself enough time to get signatures and submit paperwork for the college to review. Visit the college's website for dates and deadlines, as they vary by campus.
Follow class registration steps as required by the college.
Only the student will have access to register themselves for a college course. MLKHS staff will not have any access to student information that pertains to the college.
If you would like to get your college class grade(s) added to high school transcripts, you must request official transcripts from the college to MLKHS (see here). Students are responsible for any transcript ordering fees incurred by the college.
Martin Luther King High School started participation in the Riverside City College-College and Career Access Pathway (CCAP) agreement with Riverside City College beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. Students entering the 9th grade have the opportunity to be part of a cohort of students who can earn college credit which will also help to satisfy high school graduation requirements and potentially allow students to earn an associate’s degree while still in high hchool. These classes are taught on MLK campus and online. Instructional method is determined by RCC each semester.
CCAP classes are college classes offered on the MLKHS campus, taught by college instructors (see above comparison).
Registration in courses is organized in a cohort manner, therefore, students do not choose their courses each semester as they are determined by cohort.
