An apprenticeship combines learning and working. Apprenticeships offer structured courses of study that lead to qualifications while working and being paid to do a job. Depending on the field, they can last a minimum of about 12 months and can be as long as 4 or 5 years. Apprenticeships are great a great option for those hoping to go straight into the workforce and skip the traditional types of courses you might take at a college. An apprenticeship can lead on to higher education or full-time employment.
Students looking to take field-specific classes or receive training in a specific field can consider community colleges or vocational schools as a way to meet their goals. In addition to offering associate degrees and transfer options to a university, community colleges offer certificates for those wanting to enter a specific industry. They have CTE programs like Automotive and Photography. Every community college offers similar CTE options, but will have certain programs unique to their campus. Students should be sure to search for the best schools for their goals. The college that offers a specific program may not be the one nearest in distance.
There are many options for vocational schools and community colleges. When you have found a college you are interested in, be sure to reach out to a counselor or admissions counselor from that college to get more information on getting started.
