English 10 is a course which builds upon skills students have acquired previously and continues to develop an academic approach to literature. Students will read a variety of short stories, have choice book units, and read classic literature with a focus on literary analysis and how theme brings literature to life. The whole class novels will be devoted to reading and analyzing literature such as Hamlet, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Night. The students will respond to the literature with various writing and creative projects. In addition to reading and writing, the students will concentrate on improving their grammar skills and complete ACT vocabulary weekly. We will write creative stories, poetry, journals, and argumentative essays that require students to pose arguments and support them with evidence. Students will also conduct research and write a formal essay summarizing their findings. We will also incorporate strategies that will help students to have more confidence on the ASPIRE test in accordance with the Common Core State Standards to guide us.

We will use www.actacademy.org, practice tests, and other study methods such as Quizlet, Quizziz, and Kahoot in order to prepare for the ACT Test. We will focus on time management, test taking skills, and study skills.

Students who have an ACT Reading score lower than 22 or English score lower than 18 are encouraged to take this course. After taking this course, students should be able to enroll into College Writing and Literature courses even if they do not meet the ACT or entrance exam requirements.
English 12 will introduce you to the skills needed to read and write at a higher level. This course focuses on enhancing reading and study techniques and offers you extended practice in applying these strategies to a variety of higher-level materials. Emphasis will be given to developing the critical thinking and reading skills necessary to be successful high-level readers. Reading topics covered will include identifying main ideas and supporting details, highlighting and annotating text, summary writing, and making inferences. While assuming competence in basic paragraph and essay structure, English 12 also reinforces principles of composition that employ critical thinking for writing and develops your grammatical competence and writing style. Through multiple revisions and workshops, you will acquire writing process awareness, self-advocacy skills for understanding and managing assignments, and information literacy skills
to prepare you for high level reading and writing.

Advanced Language and Composition is a year-long course for students who enjoy academic arguing, both in writing and speaking. Students will adhere to the collegiate standards of English. The pace and rigor of this course is meant to mirror that of a first year college level English course. Students should be passionate about reading and writing, willing to apply critical thinking, and possess an interest to learn more about analyzing a variety of literature from multiple genres and time periods. Students will do so through reading, writing, oral communication, research, journaling, essays, projects, Socratic seminars and group collaboration. We will be reading a number of texts at above-average speed and students are expected to read and study accordingly outside of class. You will have the option to take the AP exam at the end of the year to earn college English credit, should you earn a passing score. The exam is not required, but highly encouraged.

A Writing-Based Inquiry Seminar for students in CAPP and select other distance learning programs. Students will develop their writing, critical reading, critical thinking, and information literacy skills by exploring a single topic in depth. Students are expected to participate actively in their own learning through class discussions and group activities.
Successful completion of English 101 fulfills the English composition or Quest Writing general education requirement.

In this course, students will develop their writing, critical reading, critical thinking, and literacy skills by exploring modern literature from around the world. Over the course of this class, you will familiarize yourself with writing from a variety of modern authors and genres (poetry, fiction & nonfiction), and will examine how these works voice similar or differing concerns depending on the writers’ race, class, and sexual orientation.
Students are expected to participate actively in their own learning through class discussions and group activities. The theme may vary, depending on the instructor, but will nevertheless include a global emphasis. It is recommended for non-English majors. CAPP College English I is a required prerequisite.
