Forestry and Natural Resources Management looks at how we manage our natural resources throughout the world. The course will focus on our two most important renewable resources: water and trees. Topics include: history of Wisconsin forests, tree identification, wildlife conservation, various wildlife species, food sources, lake and pond development, wildflowers and prairies. Field trips to the Rio School Forest and many outdoor project opportunities will also be included in this class.

Wildlife & Recreation Management is a non-traditional agriculture class that looks at how we manage our environment. This course is designed to provide students with a deeper appreciation for our wildlife and natural resources. Topics include careers, the political aspects of wildlife management, game management, pollution, GPS orienteering, aquaculture, hunting and fishing practices, fish identification, and taxidermy.

This course is devoted to students who want to continue their interest in plant science and apply it to managing a greenhouse and developing landscapes where horticulture industry skills may be learned and used. Topics will revolve around the business, management and production of flowers and plants for the Annual Greenhouse Sale in the spring. We will work to develop landscape designs, plant selection and spend time outside landscaping flower beds, trimming shrubs and growing vegetables in the school garden.

Farm to Table Food Science will stimulate student interest in the production, processing, marketing and behavior of food substances through hands-on lab activities. Do you ever wonder how root beer is made? Will you get sick if you eat mold or fungi? How does milk become whipped cream, butter, ice cream or yogurt? Where does a steak come from; is it the store? Students will learn the principles of food processing, food handling and safety, wholesale and retail meat cuts and evaluation of quality, nutrition principles, and practical methods of simple food preservation.

This course explores the many aspects of food animal production including dairy and beef cattle, sheep, swine, dairy and meat goats, and poultry. Students will learn to identify the major breeds and to evaluate conformation of each species. General principles of animal nutrition, housing, health management, reproduction, and marketing will be covered plus specific requirements for each species. Hands-on activities include ration formulation, development of meat animal production plans and design of animal housing.

Ag Leadership is a course designed to define and discuss leadership styles and to promote leadership among class members. All students will complete resumes, become proficient in parliamentary procedure, and apply for award applications for which they might be qualified. Students will plan and organize activities related to the FFA Program of Activities. Personal leadership skills and initiatives in the areas of stress management, communications, cultural diversity, and goal setting will also be studied.

Veterinary Science explores the career field of animal medicine. Students will learn hands-on the job of a veterinarian. Areas of Study and Laboratories involve biosecurity and animal handling/safety, Latin medical terminology, animal surgeries and treatments and care techniques. Animal health evaluation along with major disease issues affecting today’s pets and production animals are vital for any animal owner or medical worker to understand. In addition, students
will learn about vaccinations, antibiotics, drug residues and following prescribed protocols. Animal species to be studied include cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, cats, dogs and exotic pets.

Students who enroll in this class should be interested in the world of agriculture through hands-on, project-based learning. This course will be based around the Foundational SAE where students will: Explore and identify your agricultural interests. Start to develop key employability skills. Expand your personal financial literacy. Prepare you to work safely. Understand more about different areas of the agricultural industry. Students need to have already set-up their Supervised Agricultural Experience project before enrolling in this course. For assistance in setting up your program, or to see the list of approved program areas, talk with the agricultural science instructor. You must receive permission from the instructor, school counselor and principal to participate in this course.
