Some students have disabilities that do not require special education but still need accommodations to access the general education curriculum. These students may be eligible for support through Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a civil rights law that ensures students with disabilities receive equal access to education.
A 504 Plan outlines accommodations and supports that enable a student with a physical or mental impairment to participate in school activities alongside their peers. Common accommodations may include extended time on tests, preferential seating, modified assignments, or behavior supports.
Eligibility for a 504 Plan is determined through a team meeting, similar to a PPT, where relevant data and documentation are reviewed. Unlike an IEP, a 504 Plan does not include specialized instruction but provides essential access supports for students with documented needs. Parents are key members of the 504 team and are involved in the plan’s development and annual review.
