The Ridgefield Transition Program (RTP) provides essential educational and practical life supports for students aged 18 to 22 who have completed their high school credits but remain eligible for special education services. Operated under the Ridgefield Public Schools Special Services Department, RTP focuses on preparing students for independent adult life, meaningful employment, and community engagement.

Community-Based Job Experience & Coaching
Students gain workplace readiness through internships, job coaching, and simulated work environments. Many are placed with local partners - such as the Historical Society - for hands-on learning.
Daily Living & Life Skills Instruction
The program embeds essential life skills into daily routines—cooking, housekeeping, safety, travel training, resume writing, and more—boosting independence and competency.
Integrated Planning & Coordination
Transition plans are developed collaboratively by educators, families, and service providers, in alignment with federal and state special education guidelines.
On-Site Employment Roles
For example, a student worked as a supervisory paraeducator at Veterans Park Elementary—engaging in real tasks like cafeteria and recess supervision - while gaining transferable skills for postsecondary success .
Supporting Community Heritage
Another student aided the Ridgefield Historical Society by digitizing archival materials, showcasing how RTP connections foster both community service and skill development.
In response to growing demand, Ridgefield recently secured community approval and funding for a purpose-built RTP facility at 34 Halpin Lane. This new building, set to open fall 2025, will include dedicated spaces for life-skill instruction and job coaching, all within a fully accessible environment.
Previously, RTP operated out of portable classrooms - now recognized as insufficient for its expanding role .
Smooth Transition to Adulthood
By embedding practical life skills and community engagement into education, RTP bridges the gap from high school to adult life.
Community & Employer Collaboration
RTP partners with local businesses and organizations to give students real work and social opportunities—benefiting both learners and community partners.
Tailored, Student-Centric Support
Through individualized transition planning, job placement, and daily living instruction, RTP empowers students with the confidence and autonomy to pursue post-school goals.
