California Grant (Cal Grant)

WHAT IS A CAL GRANT AWARD?

A Cal Grant is money for college from the State of California you don’t have to pay back. To qualify, you must apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or CA Dream Act Application (CADAA) by the deadline in your senior year as well as meet the eligibility and financial requirements including the minimum GPA requirements (2.4--4.0 +). Cal Grants can be used at any University of California(UC), California State University(CSU) or California Community College, as well as qualifying independent and career colleges or technical schools in California.

HOW IS MY CAL GRANT GPA CALCULATED?

If you are applying for college during your senior year, your GPA will be calculated on a 4.00 scale. Your high school GPA will include all coursework for the sophomore year, the summer following the sophomore year, the junior year, and the summer following the junior year (NO! Your freshmen year is not factored in your CalGrant GPA)

If you are applying for college AFTER your senior year, your GPA will be calculated on a 4.00 scale. Your high school GPA will include all coursework for the sophomore year, the summer following the sophomore year, the junior year, and the summer following the junior year & your senior year

*IF YOU RETOOK A COURSE, ONLY THE RECENT GRADE/S IS FACTORED IN.

*PE/NJROTC & OTHER NON-A-G COURSES AREN'T FACTORED INTO YOUR CAL GRANT GPA.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CALGRANT AVAILABLE?

YES! There are Cal Grants A-C

Cal Grant A- Will help pay for tuition and fees at four-year colleges

Cal Grant B- Provides a living allowance of up to $1,648 (first year), in addition to tuition and fee assistance after the first year, at a two- or four-year college

Cal Grant C- Assists with the costs of a technical or career education

CAN I USE MY CALGRANT AWARD FOR A COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA?

NO! CAL GRANTS ARE ONLY USED FOR SCHOOLS WITHIN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.
