Whether or not to keep your child home from school is a question parents face regularly. Sometimes making that decision is clear. Your child feels and looks sick and you can't imagine sending them anywhere. And sometimes your child does not look very sick and the decision is less clear. If your child has any of the symptoms in the list below, it is best that your child stays home from school. If you are unsure whether or not your child should attend school, you can call the School Nurse for guidance, or bring your child to the nurse for assessment at the beginning of the school day. Feel free to contact your School Nurse at any time with questions or concerns.
Your child should stay home from school if they are experiencing:
Fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit - we require student to be fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication before coming back to school
Vomiting (2 or more times in a 24 hour period)
Diarrhea (2 stools more than normal)
Trouble breathing
Listlessness, lethargy
Diagnosis of influenza by a health care provider.
Pink eye - May return after 24 hours of antibiotic therapy
Your child doesn’t seem "herself" or "himself"
Diagnosis of vaccine preventable disease. Due to current vaccination recommendation, these diseases are rare. Please contact your school nurse if your child has been diagnosed with one of the following:
Chicken pox
Rubella
Pertussis
Mumps
Measles
Diphtheria
Please contact the school nurse for further direction on when your child can return to school.
During this time, it is extremely important that all parents and guardians monitor their child’s symptoms each morning before sending them to school. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Signs and symptoms of COVID-19 include, but are not limited to, the following:
Fever or chills (Temp of 99.1 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) *Your child must be fever free for 72 hours (3 days) without the use of fever reducing medications to return to school)
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
If you have been told that your child should isolate due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, or quarantine after exposure to a COVID-19 positive individual, please contact the school nurse and follow the guidance provided to you by the Department of Health.
Cold is a upper respiratory infection caused by a cold viruses. Flu is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza virus.
When a child is not feeling good at school our school nurses contact their parents right away. It is very important to have an updated cell, home and work phone numbers, alternative contact and updated address at school, so we can reach you at all times.
