The goal of the Student Assistance Program (SAP) is to reduce barriers to learning, provide a safe and drug free environment, and promote mental, emotional, and physical wellness in the school community.
ESAP consists of a team made up of school and agency staff to help you access services within the school and community for your child. In PA, every school district has a plan to assist students who experience barriers to learning.
SAP is mandated by Act 211. PDE resources are to assist your efforts in providing supports for students.
Sometimes, behaviors are signs that your child is frustrated and needs extra support. SAP team members have additional training to identify problems in the school setting. The team will contact parents for approval and input throughout the process. Student referrals to the SAP team are made by teachers, administrators, and family. You may refer your own child. Students may also ask for help.
Do You See Your Child Showing Any of These Behaviors?
Children Have Concerning Reactions to...?
Teachers and school staff may see your child struggling at school with signs of withdrawal, anger, refusing to participate, increased sleepiness, lack of homework, or many other signs that cause barriers to learning and success. SAP Team members will continue to gather more information including classwork, peer interaction, attendance, classroom behavior and other information from all staff supporting the child. The SAP Team will contact the parent/guardian to discuss concerns. Parent permission is needed. Once permission is received, the SAP team will work to develop a plan of action to help the student achieve success in school. It may involve both school and community supports.
All SAP information is confidential. Parents are key partners in the process and included when observations and recommendations are shared.
