It is important to make sure your child is ready to start school. The summer is the perfect time to prepare for returning to school in the Fall by having your health care provider complete any physical exams, update vaccination records, and additional medical paperwork needed to keep your child safe during school hours.
Physical Exams and Dental Exams
All new students and incoming kindergarten students require a current physical and dental exam. A copy of a physical exam provided after the age of 4 will be accepted. Without a physical exam on file with your school nurse, your child may not participate in field trips. Please remember to bring these completed forms at the start of the school year
Updated Vaccinations
Prior to the start of school it is important to make sure all immunizations are up to date. On this google site you can find a page dedicated to immunizations. Please reference it with any questions or concerns.
Medication Orders
It is not uncommon for a student to require medication while at school. Each building has a nurse who can provide medications needed for conditions such as diabetes, asthma, ADHD, and life-threatening allergies. Prior to school starting please reach out to your building nurse to discuss any medication needs or procedures your student may have while at school. Please review the forms and have your doctor complete them prior to the first day of school.
HR Emergency Form
Please remember to fill out the Health Room Emergency Form that will come home with your child during the first few days of school. Please complete the form and return it promptly.
Sleep
Did you know that not getting enough sleep can lead to attention, behavior, and learning problems? It can also be linked to obesity and other chronic health problems. Children 3-5 years old should get 10-13 hours of sleep per day, and children 6-12 years old should get 9-12 hours per day (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2020).
Here are some tips to prepare your child for school with proper sleep:
Create a bedtime routine to include a time that gives your child enough hours of sleep.
Turn screens off 30 minutes before bedtime
Do not allow screens in the bedroom.
Meals
Breakfast and lunch provide your child with the regular energy needed to learn. If your child does not like the meals provided at school, please consider eating breakfast before school and packing a nutritious lunch.
Attendance
EVERY DAY COUNTS....If you want your child to be successful at school then, YES, attendance does matter, each and every year of school!
Prevent Illness
As the school year approaches summer memories are not the only thing students share, they also share GERMS, illness and bugs. Talk to your children in advance and teach proper hygiene. Remind your children that washing hands often is very important to preventing the spread of illnesses. Also remind your children to never touch their face.
Tying Shoes
Teachers and nurses spend a lot of time tying shoes. Tied shoes prevent injuries. Teaching your student how to tie their shoes is easy but does take practice. You will find an easy way to teach shoe tying in this video:
Change of Clothes
Toileting needs and accidents are common health room visit reasons. Practice at home with your student how to button and unbutton pants. Often a student will have an accident because they wait until the last minute to go and then can not undo their pants quickly enough. If you know your student is prone to having bathroom accidents, it is helpful to keep a change of clothes in his or her back pack.
