Lynette Noni, the author of the Prison Healer, comes from an Australian background. She is a Christian who integrates her beliefs into her writing. She studied academic writing and human behavior at university. She also visited Fremantle Prison in Australia, which influenced the Prison Healer. Her Australian culture also really values freedom which we can see in her writing. We can see these three values integrated into her story telling. Firstly, we can see how her human behavior studies are integrating into her writing with how her characters interact with each other. We can see how someone's upbringing impacts how they interact with others. Especially with Kiva being raised in a prison and having to take care of people, it shows to us where Kiva’s deep compassion comes from. Secondly, we can see her value of freedom in her writing. Kiva is constantly fighting for freedom not only from Zalidov (the prison) to be free but also for the kingdom to be free of its restraints in society. Thirdly, we can see her values of her Christian faith through the way the characters in the story show Christ’s love. They show their love in a self-sacrificing way that puts others before themselves just as Christ did for us. An example of this is when Kiva dove in front of a blade to save Jaren from dying. This is evidence of a self-sacrificing love.
