The Prison Healer story begins with the Vallentis family and the Meridan family. The Vallentis family possesses the power of all four elements and the Meridan family possesses the power of healing magic that can either bring death or life. A Vallentis and a Meridian married each other and came to power over a kingdom that they ruled peacefully. However, one wanted power over the other and they broke apart. The Vallentis family came to rule and the Meridan family was banished from ever using their magic again because it brought more death than life. The two families are now sworn enemies.
Kiva Meridian grew up in a prison called Zalindov at the age of seven. She is the prison's healer and has the job of keeping all the inmates healthy. She has the task of keeping the Rebel Queen (opposed to the Vallentis rule) alive. The rebel Queen must face the Trials by Ordeals to prove her own innocence. Meanwhile, Kiva’s family outside the prison tells Kiva to keep the Rebel Queen alive. They are coming to break Kiva and the Rebel Queen out of Zalindov. Kiva then takes the Rebel Queen’s place in the trials since she is too sick to do it herself. Kiva faces the Trials by Ordeals with the help of her unrelated brother, Tipp, and close friend Jaren. Kiva survives all the Trials by Ordeals (fire, water, air, and earth) with the help of Jaren. Jaren later confesses to be a prince from the Vallentis family. He also confesses to having the power to control all four elements. Kiva also possesses the power to heal people or the power to kill people. This makes Kiva and Jaren sworn enemies but Jaren does not yet know that Kiva can heal people. Towards the end of the book there is an uprising where the Rebel Queen is killed and Kiva breaks out of prison. We learn that Kiva is the Rebel Queen's daughter and now Kiva has the job of trying to take back her crown from Jaren. Kiva leaves the prison with Tipp and goes to live with Jaren in his palace.
In the next part of Kiva’s story she reunites with her family. She has a sister Zuleeka and a brother named Torrel. Zuleeka possesses dark healer magic and wants the Vallentis crown for herself . Kiva begins to realize that she wants no part in helping her sister achieve this. Kiva begins to support Jaren and his rule. However, it is too late. Zuleeka has already begun her deceptive plan to rule the kingdom. She stabs Jaren with the heart of the gods taking away his magic. In doing this she takes away his right to rule. She also stabbed him in the heart and Kiva has to use her magic to heal him. In doing so Jaren learns that she possesses magic and was an enemy to him. This is heart breaking in a lot of ways especially since he loved her and he felt that she betrayed him, but she did not. It was all her sisters doing. Zuleeka now has rule over the kingdom and Kiva has to help take it back.
Finally, Kiva must get Jaren’s magic back to him so that he has a right to rule again. Placed back in Zalindov by her sister, Kiva manages to escape because she has been called to a meeting. She reunites with Jaren, who is very mad and not so subtly ignores her. They embark on a quest to retrieve four gems which yield the four elements; if combined with Kiva’s healing power they can return Jaren’s magic. On this journey they retrieve only three stones. However, they learn that the fourth stone belongs to Jaren’s mother and they need to go to the palace to retrieve it. When they get to the palace they see an army Zuleeka has set up to defend her crown and a battle has now begun. In the midst of this battle, Kiva goes to Jaren’s mother only to find that there is no fourth stone. The power to give Jaren back his magic is in an amulet. Kiva grabs this amulet and runs to Jaren in the middle of the battlefield. Once she gets to Jaren, she blasts her magic through the amulet into Jaren, and his magic returns. However, Zuleeka shows up with the same dagger to take away Jaren’s magic again. Kiva fights Zuleeka with her own healer magic, hoping to kill Zuleeka's dark magic out of her but she fails. She can’t beat Zuleeka. Zuleeka takes the dagger and throws it at Jaren. Kiva throws herself through the air and her magic leaves her the moment the blade hits her body. Jaren starts to run towards her but time is frozen. Zuleeka walks up to Kiva and Kiva grabs the dagger from her abdomen and scratches Zuleeka’s arm. Her magic is now gone and the nation is now under Jaren's rule. Kiva with time heals from her wound and her and Jaren's relationship is restored. Her hero story has come to an end.
