The Arts are essential to the development of our students.
We educate students by engaging and inspiring them to be life-long learners through active participation, creative expression and cultural awareness in the arts.
We facilitate learning and understanding by using an integrated, sequenced, interdisciplinary, and standards-based curriculum.
Consistent implementation of high-quality instructional materials is the first step toward ensuring every student's success. It is expected that schools and classrooms use the following materials as the foundations of classroom instruction:
All students in grades K-8 will utilize Quaver Music in addition to supplemental resources and materials provided by teachers.
All Instrumental Music students will utilize MakeMusic (SmartMusic) in addition to supplemental resources and materials provided by teachers.
All Music instruction will be standards based and culturally responsive, taking into account the needs and interests of students in the music classroom.
All RCSD students will receive the New York State mandated instructional time per Part 100 regulations.
All teachers will utilize The Art of Education in addition to supplemental resources and materials.
All Visual Art instruction will be standards based and culturally responsive, taking into account the needs and interests of students in the music classroom.
All RCSD students will receive the New York State mandated instructional time per Part 100 regulations.
All Theater/Drama & Dance instruction will be standards based and culturally responsive, taking into account the needs and interests of students in the music classroom.
All RCSD students will receive the New York State mandated instructional time per Part 100 regulations.
The Arts, including instrumental music, is part of the K-12 educational program for all students (see Arts Education Board Policy, NYSED Part 100.3, Part 100.4 & Part 100.5). Therefore, participation in Instrumental Music and General Music Ensembles should not be obstructed by staff for punitive reasons.
The Core Instructional Actions below are high-leverage, research-based strategies that will support student achievement in this discipline. This is not an exhaustive list, but a prioritized one based on what we know are our existing strengths and challenges. They are actions and strategies we expect to see teachers implementing in class with students.
The Core Student Practices identified below delineate the most important disciplinary practices in which we believe students should be engaged. They are actions, practices, and types of thinking that we should see evidence of students doing in class on a regular basis.
